The Lucky Irish hare
Irish hare threepence coin – transformed with traditional hand tools and techniques.
The three-pence coin was a pre-decimal coin worth 1/80 of an Irish pound. The Irish name (leath reul) literally meant “half reul”, the reul being a sixpence coin worth the same as the Spanish real.
I completely hand-cut and hand-carve each one of these lovely Irish Hare three pence pieces with traditional flourish scrolls and recycled – I make them green in more ways than one! I finish them with three precious stones to symbolise the flag of Ireland; an emerald, a diamond and an orange sapphire.
The coins I use to make the Lucky Irish Hare are marred from wear marks from being used to buy and sell over one hundred years ago. Rather than let them simply be melted down for the silver content, I absolutely love coming up with designs and ideas. Then, I can transform them into a little hare. By doing this I retain the historical details, simultaneously adding depth, interest and intrigue to the design. As I hand-cut each coin individually to order, every one is completely unique and unusual. They look and feel special. If you liked this Irish hare, why not have a look at a flourishing hare?
