Moon Gazing Spoon
Moon gazing hare jewellery Recycled silver Victorian teaspoon
Moon gazing hare jewellery made from antique silver spoons, what more could you ask for? This was one of my first designs and I always enjoy the opportunity to recreate it. This spectacular little silver moon gazing hare is an inspired design, celebrating my love of both the moon and hares who gaze at it!
All of the teaspoons and silver cutlery i use to make my work are individual items which have been unloved and unappreciated! These loose items are then ‘swept’ up in house clearance deals, generally be antiques dealers. They are then destined to be ‘melted down’ for their silver content as they are generally classed as undesirable due to not being in a set of six or twelve. It is these ‘lost’ pieces of historic and beautiful silverware i choose to ‘save’ from the melting pot.
It is made with green sensibilities and ethics, appropriate for such designs! The overall aim is to transform each spoon into something lovely and desirable, with a new life ahead of it!
Once the moon gazer has been cut, carved and engraved (also using traditional hand tools and methods!) i then wrap the handle to form the ‘bale’. This wrapped handle bale is a lovely feature and means that the ‘whole spoon’ is used to create the piece. The necklace then becomes a fabulous piece of jewellery to wear, ‘show off’ and talk about.
