Two Souls on the Same Branch
Lovebirds Ring Hand Carved from an Antique Silver Spoon
A Canon Piece of the Hairy Growler Collection
Some pieces are made from silver.
This one was made from company.
Long before it became a ring, this silver belonged to a table.
An antique spoon, once part of a cutlery set, moved quietly through the life of a household — laid beside plates, lifted in ordinary moments, present for meals, conversations, silences, and years that passed without notice. Over time the set was broken apart, pieces lost, and this single spoon remained.
Its surface softened by use.
Its purpose completed.
Its history intact.
Rather than melting it down and erasing what it had already known, the silver was given pause at the bench.
From the handle of the spoon, a different scene emerged:
two birds facing one another among leaves,
a pair of souls on the same branch.
The Silver Had Already Lived
There is a particular kind of beauty in silver that has served ordinary life.
Not ceremonial silver.
Not untouched silver.
Silver that has been handled.
An old spoon carries something quieter than rarity: the evidence of time. Small marks. Gentle wear. A softness that cannot be manufactured. In this ring, those traces remain part of the work. The object has changed shape, but not identity.
It has not been made new.
It has been carried forward.
A Canon of the Hairy Growler World
Some works come to sit quietly at the centre of a collection.
They gather together its deepest concerns without needing to announce themselves.
Two Souls on the Same Branch is one of those works.
It holds the essential Hairy Growler language in a single object:
-
reclaimed material with a previous life
-
hand-cut imagery rather than cast repetition
-
symbolism rooted in closeness and continuity
-
quiet transformation rather than display
Where the coin ring marks continuity, and the poesy ring carries hidden words, this ring belongs to the same lineage of intimate objects — silver shaped not for spectacle, but for affection.
It is not simply decorative.
It is relational.
Hand Cut, Hand Engraved, Made Slowly
The ring is formed entirely by hand using traditional jeweller’s techniques.
The birds and foliage are carved directly into the silver, each line engraved individually at the bench. The scene is not stamped or reproduced from a mould. It is drawn out of the metal slowly, with each cut becoming permanent.
No casting.
No duplication.
No shortcut between idea and form.
The silver dictates its own pace.
That pace remains visible in the finished ring — in the engraved lines, in the softened edges, in the quiet signs that a human hand was present throughout.
The Meaning of the Birds
Across centuries, paired birds have appeared as symbols of companionship, constancy, and the life shared between two beings who remain close not because they are identical, but because they return to the same place.
A pair of souls on the same branch.
A Love Token Lineage
Long before jewellery became widely standardised, silver objects were often reshaped into personal keepsakes.
Coins were engraved.
Spoons were transformed.
Rings were made to be worn daily rather than admired at a distance.
These were love tokens in the truest sense: objects carrying private feeling through use, touch, and time. They belonged not to fashion, but to closeness.
This ring continues that lineage.
An object once tied to the shared rituals of the table now becomes something carried on the hand — still intimate, still everyday, but changed in meaning. The spoon has not left domestic life behind. It has simply moved deeper into it.
From serving the household
to symbolising the bond within it.
A Note from the Woodland
Within the Hairy Growler world, birds often appear not as decoration, but as witnesses to relationship — creatures that remain close to branch, nest, and season. Where hares seek, foxes wander, and owls watch, these birds simply stay.

Time Horizon
Once, this silver belonged to the life of a household. Now it rests on the hand, carrying a quieter form of meaning. In years to come, it will gather another layer of history — not at the table, but in the life of the person who wears it.
Once, this silver moved through ordinary life unnoticed.
At the bench it was given stillness, reshaped not to erase its past but to continue it. Now it holds a different kind of closeness — one made to be worn, kept, and understood over time.
A pair of souls on the same branch.
Canon Note
This ring has come to sit at the heart of the Hairy Growler collection’s love-token lineage — where old silver, quiet symbolism, and enduring affection meet.
Loverbirds ring – Recycled Victorian silver spoon handle
Lovebirds ring design is freehand drawn onto the surface of the of the silver dessert spoon handle. This basic sketch is embellished and detailed with traditional hand gravers, a little hand saw and tiny drill. Once cut out the piece is formed into a lovely ring. This is then polished to a wonderful finish. The appearance of the ring is substantial yet delicate and intricate. It is super comfortable for continuous everyday wear due to the thinly tapered rear of the ring.
