A little more detail…
18th Birthday Key
The Key to the Next Chapter, Handcrafted from the Year Their Story Began
Eighteen.
One of those birthdays that really does feel different.
Childhood on one side.
Adulthood on the other.
New freedoms, new responsibilities and a whole lot of doors waiting to be opened.
For generations, the key has been given to mark this moment.
I wanted to make that old tradition feel meaningful again.
So instead of making the key from new metal, I make it from something that has already been travelling through time alongside the person receiving it.
An original British £1 coin from their birth year.
The coin is not melted down.
The key is carefully cut from within it by hand.
One object becomes another.
Currency becomes keepsake.
And the year they were born becomes the key to everything still ahead.
The Traditional Key to the Door
There was a time when reaching adulthood was described as being given the key to the door.
The key represented independence.
Trust.
Freedom.
Responsibility.
The ability to leave home and, importantly, the knowledge that you could still return.
Times have changed, but there is something rather lovely about keeping the symbolism.
At eighteen, a young person stands at the beginning of an extraordinary period of life.
University perhaps.
Work.
Travel.
Love.
Friendships.
Mistakes.
Adventures.
First homes.
New places.
And decisions nobody else can make for them anymore.
The door is open. Where they go next is theirs.
Made from Their Birth Year
This is what makes the Hairy Growler 18th Birthday Key different.
The date is not engraved afterwards to make the jewellery appear significant.
The coin itself comes from the year they were born.
For an eighteenth birthday, that means the coin and its future owner began their journeys at almost exactly the same point in history.
While a baby became a child, the coin was out there somewhere.
Passing through pockets.
Sitting in tills.
Changing hands.
Travelling around Britain.
Eventually the old round pound left circulation.
Some survived.
And one of them can now become a little piece of jewellery celebrating the person who was born in the same year.
Two journeys beginning in the same year and meeting eighteen years later.
The Coin Is Still There
I could simply melt an old coin and use the metal to make a key.
But then its history would disappear.
So I work within the original coin instead.
The outer edge survives.
Recognisable details of the old £1 remain around the design.
And from the centre, the key emerges.
The old coin and the new object exist together.
You can still see what it was.
But now you can also see what it has become.
The history has not been erased. It has simply changed shape.
Choose Their Key
Not every eighteen-year-old has the same personality, so there is a choice of key design.
Traditional has the character of an old-fashioned key, a little more decorative and reminiscent of keys that might once have opened an old wooden door, cabinet or secret drawer.
Modern takes the same idea and gives it a cleaner, more contemporary shape.
The symbolism remains the same.
The choice is simply about which one feels most like them.
A Little Something Hidden in the Detail
The key can also be personalised with a small engraved detail.
Choose a special initial.
Choose 18.
Or leave the piece without additional engraving and allow the coin itself to tell the story.
I like personalisation to feel as though it belongs to the jewellery rather than shouting from it.
Something discovered on a second look is often more personal than something announced on the first.
Made Slowly at the Hairy Growler Bench
Every key is made individually to order.
I begin with the original birth-year £1 coin.
The design is drawn onto the coin by hand.
Tiny entry holes are drilled into the sections that need to disappear.
A fine jeweller’s saw blade is threaded through those openings.
Then the cutting begins.
Slowly.
Carefully.
One section at a time.
The background disappears and the key begins to emerge from inside the coin.
Once the piercing is complete, chisels, files and traditional hand tools are used to refine and carve the design.
Edges are softened.
Surfaces are finished.
Small details are added.
And eventually an old pound coin becomes something completely different.
The key is not attached to the coin. It is released from it.
Made by Hand, Not Made Identical
There is another reason I still make these individually.
An eighteenth birthday is personal.
The gift should feel personal too.
The design is drawn and worked by hand rather than mechanically reproduced, so tiny differences naturally appear from one key to another.
A curve may vary slightly.
A saw line may follow a subtly different path.
The original coin will carry its own marks from circulation.
Those variations are part of the piece.
There will be other 18th Birthday Keys, but this particular one will belong to one particular eighteenth birthday.
Old Coins Instead of New Metal
Recycled material has always sat at the heart of Hairy Growler.
I would much rather take something that has reached the end of its original purpose and ask what else it might become.
The old round pound is perfect for that.
It was designed to be used.
It circulated.
It became worn.
Eventually it became obsolete as currency.
But obsolete does not mean useless.
At the Hairy Growler bench, the end of one life can simply be the beginning of another.
Old money. New purpose.
Bronze or Silver
The classic version is made from an original bronze-coloured £1 coin from the recipient’s birth year.
Where available, there may also be the option of having the piece made from a sterling silver £1 coin.
The bronze version retains the unmistakable warmth and familiarity of the old round pound.
The silver version turns the same idea into something rarer and more precious.
Both tell the same story.
The important part is the year.
The Key to the Family Home
There is another interpretation of the traditional eighteenth birthday key that I particularly like.
Growing up means leaving.
But it does not have to mean leaving behind.
The key can represent the freedom to go out into the world while still carrying a connection to home.
A parent giving this piece might see it as saying:
The world is yours to explore, but there will always be a door here for you.
That makes this a surprisingly emotional little piece of jewellery.
Especially when the person receiving it eventually understands what their parents were trying to say.
A Gift That Can Grow Up With Them
Many eighteenth birthday gifts belong very specifically to being eighteen.
I wanted this one to be different.
At eighteen it represents the beginning of adulthood.
At twenty-five it might remind them of home.
At forty it may have become something they would never willingly part with.
And many years from now, the old birth-year coin may tell somebody else where the story began.
That is the kind of jewellery I like making.
Not something for the birthday. Something that begins at the birthday.
Make It Their Own
The pendant can be worn simply on its own or paired with one of my sterling silver necklace chains.
For silver chains, the handmade Hairy Growler Shepherd’s Crook catch becomes another small part of the piece.
You can also choose to add one of the little charms available with the necklace options, allowing another small piece of symbolism to travel alongside the key.
A star.
A moon.
A heart.
An acorn.
A feather.
Or whichever little detail feels right for them.
Small choices gradually turn the necklace into their necklace.

The Key to What Comes Next
At eighteen, nobody really knows where life is going.
That is rather the point.
There are doors ahead that have not even appeared yet.
People they have not met.
Places they have not visited.
Mistakes still to make.
Things still to learn.
Lives they cannot yet imagine living.
This little key cannot tell them which door to open.
It is simply there to mark the moment when the choice became theirs.
From Pocket Change to a Gift for Life
Once, it was an ordinary pound coin.
It was made in the same year they were born.
For eighteen years, their stories travelled separately.
Then the coin arrived at my bench.
A saw passed through it.
The old metal opened.
And inside was a key.
Their year.
Their key.
Their door to open.

Beautifully packaged with care and attention to detail in every aspect, this gorgeous little necklace is just a delight – particularly the brass star option on the chain, which just makes it extra-special. Absolutely 10/10.

I ordered an 18th birthday key necklace and it is such beautiful craftmanship. I am excited to see my daughters face when she receives it.
