Octopus forks, a couple, entwined forever…

Silver fork bracelet – Recycled American flatware silver forks

This lovely unique bracelet, inspired by the Enteroctopus is created simply from a pair of antique American flatware silver dinner forks. The actual tines ‘prongs’ are sculpted and shaped in such a way that they hold each other into a perfectly locked position. . A minimal and simple beautiful design, the essence of recycled jewellery.

* For a limited time the design is available fashioned from beautiful recycled hallmarked British sterling silver dinner forks.

Recycling old unwanted and unloved forks into jewelry is a potent metaphor for transformation, value, and memory. The act of turning a utilitarian, domestic object into a piece of personal adornment re-frames its entire meaning. The core Hairy Growler symbolic act is the transformation of one thing into another. From former de-function into beauty and whimsy. A fork’s purpose is to facilitate eating, a mechanical and sometimes messy act. The jewelry, however, has no practical purpose; its value is purely aesthetic and sentimental. This speaks to the poetic idea of finding beauty in the discarded, and reassigning meaning to a life once spent on mundane tasks.

The recycling of the old fork gives the material a new life. For me this personally represents a human second chance—it speaks to the idea that people can change, redefine themselves, or be remade into something more meaningful and beautiful after a period of being “bent” or “tarnished”.

The original object, a silver fork, often carries a history. Recycling it into jewelry preserves and reshapes this legacy. Silverware is often passed down through generations, carrying with it the weight of family dinners, conversations, and traditions. A fork from a grandmother’s set, remade into a ring or pendant, literally puts that history onto the body, transforming a family relic into a personal talisman.

The transformation can also be a way of taking something from a past that is broken or bittersweet and turning it into something beautiful. A fork that witnessed a sad meal could become a piece of jewelry worn as a symbol of overcoming that hardship. The repurposing of a mass-produced item from a matching set into a unique, handmade piece speaks to power of non-conformity and individuality in the face of increasing thought control.

Forks from a cutlery set are designed for uniformity. The act of bending, twisting, and reshaping a fork into jewelry is a celebration of individuality and the beauty that comes from standing apart. The practice of repurposing silver cutlery into jewelry has a history of rebellion. In 17th-century England, poor servants would steal silver spoons and fashion them into rings for their loved ones, turning a symbol of the master’s wealth into a token of the servant’s devotion. Poetically, this captures the idea of reclaiming and subverting an established system.

The act of recycling itself carries significant symbolic weight. The use of recycled cutlery represents a thoughtful and responsible approach to creation, contrasting with the environmental impact of mining new silver. This demonstrates the importance of stewardship and a respect for the earth. The story of the silver becomes cyclical: from the earth, to the family table, and back into a personal, wearable treasure. This mirrors nature’s own cycle of decay and rebirth.

The octopus, with its intelligence, adaptability, and intriguing appearance, has inspired my craftsmen and artists across cultures and throughout time to weave it into their works as a multifaceted symbol.

The octopus’s mastery of camouflage and ability to change its form is a powerful metaphor for adapting to different situations, blending in, and navigating life’s challenges with flexibility. As one of the most intelligent invertebrates, octopuses represent strategic thinking, ingenuity, and the capacity to find creative solutions to complex problems.

The octopus’s highly sensitive tentacles, equipped with numerous neurons, embody a heightened sense of awareness and illuminated perception. As a deep-sea creature inhabiting the unexplored realms of the ocean, the octopus can symbolize the unknown, the mysteries of the unconscious mind, and a journey into the hidden depths of oneself. Its elusive nature and the secrets it holds can represent the allure of the mysterious, hidden depths of knowledge, and a connection to the enigmatic forces of nature.

The ability to regenerate lost limbs makes the octopus a potent symbol of healing, resilience, and the capacity for renewal and rebirth after overcoming adversity.
This regenerative quality can also symbolize personal transformation, growth, and the journey of becoming the strongest, most complete version of oneself.

The octopus is also imagined as a formidable creature embodying terror and danger, especially in legends like the Kraken.

  5. Jeremy –

    beautiful as ever

I have only purchased twice from Hairy Growler but not because I am not entirely delighted with their work, quite the contrary. More because I consider their work to be only for those really special occasions. One was my Wife’s 40th and the next my wife’s 50th Birthday. Both the necklace and now bangle are some of her favourite pieces and are always remarked upon. So I could not be more delighted.

    Great service and fantastic product

Firstly it is a pleasure to deal with this company, I found them very helpful. The piece I wanted was the Enteroctopus forks, entwined forever as a 25th wedding anniversary gift for my wife. I went for the antique Victorian solid silver forks and was not disappointed, they are beautiful. The bangle was more than well received by my wife, she absolutely loves it and can’t stop wearing it and showing it off to everyone. The plus is that if you didn’t know if was forks, at first glance you won’t, as it looks like a bangle with an intricate and beautiful design. In fact a few people have not believed it was forks at all and were surprised when my wife took it off and showed them the inside view, where it is obviously forks!!! In summary I had great service for an absolutely beautiful unique piece of jewellery that my wife absolutely loves. Great all round.
