A little more detail…
Magical hares and rabbits jewellery – Recycled out of circulation silver Florin two shilling coin
In Richard Adams’ wonderful story Watership Down itself is a promised land. The Efrafa warren is a symbol of totalitarianism, and the entire rabbit journey as an allegory for human struggles between tyranny and freedom. The novel contrasts the democratic ideals of Watership Down with the authoritarian regime of Efrafa, while also serving as a commentary on the impact of human development on the natural world.
The hill where the rabbits establish their home is a symbol of a desired future and an ideal society where they can live freely and make their own choices. The new warren at Watership Down represents a democratic system, with a leader like Hazel who makes decisions for the benefit of the entire community.
The river seems to symbolizes the flow of life, symbolizing both the journey of the rabbits and the broader changes they experience.
The warren of Efrafa, ruled by the cruel General Woundwort, serves as a potent allegory for totalitarian regimes and fascism. bThe strict, militaristic control and brutal methods used in Efrafa highlight the oppression and lack of freedom experienced under an authoritarian system. The destruction of the Sandleford Warren for “building land” symbolizes how human development and indifference can destroy the natural world and the lives of other species.
The rabbits’ journey mirrors heroic quest themes from classical literature, such as the Odyssey and the Aeneid, creating a timeless story of struggle and triumph.
Swiftness and Agility: The hare’s iconic leaps and incredible speed naturally evoke swiftness, agility, and quick thinking. The swift movements you see them make reflects the unpredictable nature of life and the need to adapt quickly to evolving circumstances.
Fleeting Moments: The hare’s rapid movement highlights the ephemeral nature of beauty, joy, or life itself. Despite its speed, the hare is a prey animal, highlighting its vulnerability while also embodying resilience and the ability to outwit predators.
The Pursuit of Freedom & Triumph of the Spirit Leaping away from danger can symbolize the constant struggle for freedom, both literal and spiritual. The hare’s continued existence despite threats speaks to an indomitable spirit and the ability to persevere in the face of adversity.
Fertility and Rebirth: Hares are renowned for their fecundity, associating them with themes of fertility, renewal, and the cyclical nature of life. The leaping hare can mark a departure from the old and a hopeful embrace of what’s to come, aligning with the renewal of spring and the potential for fresh starts. The hare’s strong connection to life and reproduction can represent the powerful creative forces at play in nature and in human experience.
Trickster Archetype: In various cultures, the hare plays the role of a clever and mischievous trickster, often outsmarting larger, more powerful creatures. Its tricks represent immense resourcefulness, intelligence, and the ability to navigate challenges through wit and adaptability.
Challenging Authority: The trickster hare often defies expectations and social norms, hinting at the need to question authority and find unconventional solutions.
The Otherworld and Mystery: Hares are often seen as connected to the moon, magic, and the unseen realms in folklore. The Hare’s elusive nature and associations with ancient beliefs can lend a poetic sense of mystery, magic, and the spiritual to the image. Escape Kuff video
Each and every Hare is carefully and individually hand cut from within a recycled sterling silver Florin coin. Each and every one i make is made from a coin of the same sterling silver quality and age of over 100 years old. These coins are lovely to use as the silver has a unmistakable feel and texture. The age and history of the silver is also great. Its wonderful to think that the necklace or item of jewellery you are wearing was once a silver coin, used over one hundred years ago, in various transactions, etc.
Each coin requires a great deal of time and attention to transform it from an unused, worn coin into a beautiful work of art. All work undertaken is performed with traditional hand tools and techniques. This is an ethical, sustainable approach to wearable jewellery art.
