A little more detail…

Hare Moon necklace – handcrafted and recycled from six recycled silver threepence coins.

This is an absolute joy and a priveledge to create. The hare moon design is based around recyling six simple sterling silver threepence coins circa 1890’s – 1900’s in a medieval Trefoil style design.  A pair of wild hares returning home under the hare moon.

The moon-gazing hare evokes a profound connection between the earthly and celestial, representing cycles of rebirth, intuition, and the mysteries of nature. The image, found in folklore and art across many cultures, symbolizes an array of powerful forces, from fertility and good fortune to self-sacrifice and transformation.

As a hugely nocturnal creature, the hare is an animal of the earth, but its focus on the moon creates a potent image of connection between the terrestrial and the divine. The upward gaze signifies longing, curiosity, and a sense of wonder at the forces beyond our world.

The hare is a sacred symbol of the goddess, particularly lunar goddesses like Eostre. Its tie to the moon, a traditional symbol of feminine energy, links the moon-gazing hare to intuition, the divine feminine, and the mysteries of life and death. The image of the hare is closely linked with the moon’s own cycle of death and rebirth. For the Anglo-Saxons, the hare’s association with the goddess Eostre and the spring equinox represented the renewal of nature. This connection eventually evolved into the modern Easter Bunny.

In East Asian folklore, the “moon rabbit” or “Jade rabbit” is seen in the moon’s shadowy markings, pounding a mortar and pestle. The best-known version of the story tells of a rabbit who, when faced with a hungry beggar (a disguised deity), selflessly throws itself into a fire to provide a meal. The deity saves the rabbit and honors its sacrifice by placing it on the moon. This folk tale transformed the hare into a symbol of generosity, self-sacrifice, and benevolence. Its eternal presence on the moon serves as a timeless reminder to show kindness and compassion toward those in need.

The hare is often imagined as a magical and elusive creature associated with shape-shifting in witchcraft and folklore. Its nocturnal habits and sudden, erratic movements contribute to its mystique. In this context, the moon-gazing hare represents spiritual transformation and connection to the magical forces of the night. The moon-gazing hare has been described as an archetype—a potent symbol embedded in the collective human consciousness for millennia. It speaks to persistent human themes of hope, transformation, and our profound, instinctual connection to the natural world and its cycles.

Indeed spotting a moon-gazing hare is a sign of good fortune, abundance, and rebirth. The hairy Growler moon gazing hare can be used to convey a blessing or the promise of a fruitful future. The hare’s reputation for rapid breeding further cements its status as a symbol of fertility and new life.

Swiftness and Agility: The hare’s iconic leaps and incredible speed naturally evoke swiftness, agility, and quick thinking. The swift movements you see them make reflects the unpredictable nature of life and the need to adapt quickly to evolving circumstances.

Fleeting Moments: The hare’s rapid movement highlights the ephemeral nature of beauty, joy, or life itself. Despite its speed, the hare is a prey animal, highlighting its vulnerability while also embodying resilience and the ability to outwit predators.

The Pursuit of Freedom & Triumph of the Spirit Leaping away from danger can symbolize the constant struggle for freedom, both literal and spiritual. The hare’s continued existence despite threats speaks to an indomitable spirit and the ability to persevere in the face of adversity.

Fertility and Rebirth: Hares are renowned for their fecundity, associating them with themes of fertility, renewal, and the cyclical nature of life. The leaping hare can mark a departure from the old and a hopeful embrace of what’s to come, aligning with the renewal of spring and the potential for fresh starts. The hare’s strong connection to life and reproduction can represent the powerful creative forces at play in nature and in human experience.

Trickster Archetype: In various cultures, the hare plays the role of a clever and mischievous trickster, often outsmarting larger, more powerful creatures. Its tricks represent immense resourcefulness, intelligence, and the ability to navigate challenges through wit and adaptability.

Challenging Authority: The trickster hare often defies expectations and social norms, hinting at the need to question authority and find unconventional solutions.

The Otherworld and Mystery: Hares are often seen as connected to the moon, magic, and the unseen realms in folklore. The Hare’s elusive nature and associations with ancient beliefs can lend a poetic sense of mystery, magic, and the spiritual to the image.

As with all Hairy Growler jewellery each and every one ordered is completely unique, hand made and 100% recycled.

The design is freehand sketched onto the surface of the coins. A jewellers piercing saw is used to delicately cut and carve the design from the coins. The pendant is then gently filed, shaped, polished and oxidised to give it a brilliant silver finished contrasted with the black oxidisation of the midnight sky.

You are welcome to request a simple inscription of initials on the reverse of the pendant.
