The moon rabbit is a tale of the rabbit’s selfless sacrifice, altruism and generosity.
In Buddhist and Japanese folklore, a deity disguised as a starving beggar tests animals by asking for food. When a monkey brings fruit and a fox brings fish, the rabbit, with only grass to offer, throws itself into a fire to provide food. Moved by this act of profound kindness, the deity immortalizes the rabbit’s image on the moon as a timeless reminder of compassion. This points out that true virtue and self-sacrifice are rewarded and remembered eternally by a higher power.
In Aztec mythology, the god Quetzalcoatl, moved by a rabbit’s selfless offer of itself as food, places the rabbit’s image on the moon, declaring it will be remembered forever.
In Chinese and Vietnamese folklore, the moon rabbit is associated with immortality and the tireless effort to achieve it. The rabbit, often called the “Jade Rabbit,” is the companion of the moon goddess, Chang’e, tirelessly pounding herbs to create the elixir of immortality.
The rabbit’s connection to the moon and its prolific nature tie the symbol to themes of fertility, rebirth, and the lunar cycle. The rabbit’s short gestation period, which roughly aligns with the moon’s monthly cycle, led many cultures to associate it with lunar cycles and the rhythms of nature. The moon rabbit is connected to the waxing and waning phases of the moon. In this context, the rabbit symbolizes the unending cycle of life, death, and rebirth.
In Korean and Japanese folklore, the rabbit pounds ingredients for rice cakes, a staple of harvest festivals. This connects the moon rabbit to the harvest moon and the promise of abundance and prosperity.
The bunny seen in the light of the moon, the rabbit represents the hidden, subconscious, and mystical aspects of life. It is a gentle guide through the unseen aspects of the world.
This beautiful little necklace has been adapted from recycled silver coins circa 1880’s. The star hanging from the ‘hairy growler’ shepards crook signature clasp is hand cut from a pre 1920’s silver shilling, you can also choose a heart or crescent moon. Each necklace is handcrafted and completely unique; you are welcome to select a name or initials to be engraved on the reverse of the rabbit.
