A Little More Detail…
In the UK, silver-coloured coins minted pre-1919 were made from 925 silver – more commonly known as sterling silver. This quality of silver, no longer in general currency, is ideal for jewellery purposes, and the coin’s nature gives each piece an inherent added layer of history and charm. These coins, whilst once being a foundational part of society and culture, now have almost no value, being too scarred and worn for collecting purposes. So, instead of letting these beautiful coins (most over 100 years old!) be melted down, I reshape them into a timeless piece of unique and handmade jewellery that can be treasured for a lifetime.
The opal used in this piece also has its own story, which begins in the boulders of Australia. These opals are harvested ethically, in line with Australia’s stringent regulations, from large ironstone boulders that form underground, and are used without treatments to taint their natural allure. In English history, opals had a particular surge in popularity in the Middle Ages, when the opal was seen as all-encompassing; within the opal’s depths one can find the colours of all other gems, and so the opal contained all the blessings of the other gemstones, from the calm luxuriance of sapphires, to the luscious wink of rubies.
This piece would not be complete, of course, without the stunning 18-ct gold setting for the opal moon, enhancing the gem’s natural glimmer and complementing the delicate 24-ct, pure gold star that is set next to the moon as a finishing touch.
