A little more detail…

Slinky Fox

She was never going to stay where you left her.

A flash of copper.

A glimpse of silver.

And she’s gone.

Slinky Fox is a Hairy Growler Signature bracelet, individually handcrafted from old British coins and built around one of the most elusive characters in the British landscape.

The fox is created from two different histories: an old silver shilling and a vintage copper halfpenny.

Two coins.

Two metals.

One wild little creature.

She Began as Money. Now She Runs Wild.

Before there was a fox, there were coins.

The silver began life as an old British shilling, typically dating from around the beginning of the twentieth century.

The warm reddish fox is created using copper reclaimed from an old British halfpenny.

I don’t melt these coins down and turn them into anonymous metal.

I want some of their first life to survive.

So the fox is created directly from the old coinage, allowing age, colour, wear and history to become part of the finished piece.

The material isn’t simply recycled. Its story is continued.

The Fox in Silver and Copper

Copper was the obvious choice for her.

Against the cooler silver, its natural reddish warmth brings the fox immediately to life.

The two metals sit together much as they do in the landscape: silver light and russet fur, shadow and autumn, something glimpsed briefly before it disappears into the undergrowth.

Over time the copper will continue to develop its own patina.

It may deepen, darken and brighten in different places according to how the bracelet is worn.

That changing surface is part of the piece.

A fox should never remain entirely still.

The Trickster

Foxes have followed us through folklore for centuries.

They are clever, adaptable and notoriously difficult to pin down.

In old stories the fox often appears as the trickster, surviving not through strength but through intelligence.

She watches.

Waits.

Changes direction.

Finds another way through.

That makes the fox more than a symbol of cunning.

She is a creature of resourcefulness.

When the obvious path closes, the fox finds another.

Between Two Worlds

The fox has always seemed to belong somewhere between the familiar and the wild.

She can live beside us without ever truly becoming ours.

A field edge.

A woodland path.

A garden at dusk.

A sudden shape crossing the road at night.

Then nothing.

This ability to move between worlds has given the fox a long association with thresholds, intuition and transformation.

She knows how to live at the edges.

Made Slowly at the Bench

Slinky Fox isn’t cast from a master mould.

The old coins themselves become the raw material.

The fox is worked by hand using traditional jewellery tools, with the silhouette cut, carved and engraved into the metal.

Fine engraved lines create the details that bring character and movement into the little animal.

The work is deliberately slow.

That matters.

Because when something is made directly from old material by hand, tiny differences inevitably appear.

Those differences are not flaws to remove.

They are how you know which fox is yours.

A Bracelet Built Around the Fox

The fox doesn’t simply hang from an ordinary bracelet.

She travels along a substantial sterling silver Hairy Growler chain, giving the piece the weight and presence of a proper piece of jewellery.

The bracelet is finished with my handmade Shepherd’s Crook safety fastening.

The curled form has become one of the recurring signatures of my work.

I like clasps that deserve to be seen.

So rather than hiding the fastening at the back of the piece, it becomes part of the design.

Choose Your Two Talismans

At the Shepherd’s Crook sit two small charms.

You choose them.

Star.

Moon.

Heart.

Lucky four-leaf clover.

Acorn.

Oak leaf.

Feather.

Paw print.

Each can be made in silver, copper or bronze, allowing you to quietly alter the character and meaning of your bracelet.

They are small details, but I think small details are often where jewellery becomes personal.

The fox tells one story. Your talismans tell another.

A Secret on the Reverse

The reverse of the fox can also carry something known only to its wearer.

A name.

Initials.

A date.

A few carefully chosen words.

From the outside it remains Slinky Fox.

Turn her over and another story can be waiting there.

Made to Change

Silver and copper age differently.

That’s one of the reasons I love putting them together.

The silver will polish naturally where it touches skin and clothing.

Recessed details may become darker.

The copper fox will gradually develop a richer surface of its own.

Years from now, your bracelet shouldn’t look exactly as it did on the day it left my bench.

It should look like yours.

Old coins carrying new evidence of a life being lived.

Slinky Fox

Once there was a shilling.

And somewhere else, a copper halfpenny.

They travelled through different pockets, different hands and different lives.

Eventually they arrived at the same bench.

One became the cool silver around her.

The other became the warmth of the fox.

And together they began another life.

Not as money.

Not locked away.

But travelling again.

This time around your wrist.

She began as money. Now she runs wild.
