A little more detail…
Swallows necklace handcrafted and recycled from a 100 year old silver Shilling coins.
The sight of migrating swallows reminds us of their role as harbingers of renewal, new beginnings, and spring, embodying freedom, hope, and the cyclical nature of life through their annual journey. They are associated with good fortune, protection, and loyalty due to their return to familiar nesting sites, as well as the themes of overcoming challenges and finding one’s way home. Maritime Lore connects them to safe passage and eternal peace, while their flight patterns were historically used for weather prediction.
Their arrival in spring after the long winter is a powerful symbol of new starts, fresh opportunities, and the promise of warmer days. Seen as a sign of good luck, especially when they nest near homes, swallows bring prosperity, peace, and joy to those who welcome them.
Their ability to undertake long, epic migratory journeys symbolizes the freedom to explore, travel, and venture into new experiences. Their ability and habit of returning to the same nesting sites year after year makes them a lasting symbol of fidelity, commitment, and enduring love. The arduous journey they undertake represents the perseverance needed to overcome life’s difficulties and emerge stronger. The swallow truly embodies the concept of a physical and spiritual return, representing a homecoming after a period of struggle, learning, or wandering.
This winderful ‘free as a bird’ migrating swallows necklace has been carefully and lovingly crafted from a selection of pre 1920 sterling silver one and two shilling, Florin coins. The majority of coins circulated over a hundred years ago are pure silver and the ones that are still remaining are in poor condition, from the point of view of a coin collector. The coins are thus only valued for their inherent scrap silver value, which is obviously a real shame. So rather than them being melted i like to flatten the coins and use the history and life of the coin as an extra element of interest and beauty.
The resultant sterling silver swallow necklace is suspended from a delicate yet strong, unobtrusive silver chain.
