A little more detail…
I have created this by recycling a 1916 Half crown sterling silver coin which was super worn and defo uncollectible in any way. I have used traditional hand tools and lots of time.
In poetry and art, the unicorn symbolizes purity, innocence, and grace, often appearing in allegories of Christ and the Virgin Mary. It also represents power and ferocity, and is known for its healing abilities, particularly its horn’s power to purify poisoned water. While sometimes seen as a wild, untameable creature, it could only be captured by a virgin, embodying chivalry and ultimate control over raw power.
The unicorn’s wild nature was thought to be tamed only by a virgin maiden, making it a symbol of purity, chastity, and grace. The unicorn in an “enclosed garden” (Hortus Conclusus) represents the Virgin Mary, a sealed spring or fountain.
The unicorn is a symbol of Christ and the Incarnation in medieval art and literature. The “Hunt of the Unicorn” motif in the famous tapestries shows the unicorn being captured, evoking the Crucifixion of Christ. The archangel Gabriel’s horn is sometimes depicted, further linking the image to the Annunciation.
Despite its association with purity, the unicorn is also a powerful and ferocious creature, symbolizing untameable power. The unicorn’s power also connects to masculinity, as seen in Biblical passages using it as a symbol of strength and might.
Numbers 23:22 – Psalm 92:10 – Isaiah 34:7
The coin has been flattened into a nice workable area. The beautiful leaping unicorn is then hand sketched onto the surface and then cut out by hand with a traditional jewellers saw. You are welcome to request hand engraved initials to be carved onto the reverse side.
Obviously the ‘off-cut’ of the remaining silver coin is packed with the silver invitation for your interest and to keep its history, origin and story alive. The price for this piece also includes the silver chain.
