Magical Mushroom 50p Pendant
Hand cut, carved and engraved from an upcycled British 50p coin
She began as money.
Now she glimmers like a fragment of another world.
This piece started life as an old British 50 pence coin, ordinary in purpose, familiar in the hand, made to pass unnoticed through the world. But under the saw, the graver, and the slow patience of the bench, it became something else entirely: a small silver vision of mushrooms, moonlight, and stars — a pocket-sized doorway into the strange and beautiful.
A crescent moon hangs over a gathering of wild mushrooms, rising from the dark like a secret woodland hymn. The stars burn quietly above them. There is something dreamlike in the scene, but also something older than dream: the sense that the natural world still keeps its own symbols, its own language, its own hidden fires.
Mushrooms have always carried a charge. They belong to shadow and transformation, to unseen networks, to folklore, to altered perception, to the old edges where wonder and unease meet. Under moonlight, they feel almost like messengers — delicate, uncanny, and full of quiet mischief. Here, cut into an old coin by hand, they become a kind of talisman: earthy and celestial at once.
What makes this piece sing is that tension between the humble and the enchanted.
The coin’s first life is still present in it. The iconic seven sided shape. That matters. It once moved through countless hands, through shops, pockets, pavements, and passing years. It belonged to the everyday world of use and exchange. Now it has been remade into something slower, stranger, and more lasting. Not erased. Transformed.
That is part of the magic of old coin metal in the Hairy Growler workshop. A life already lived is not a flaw to be polished away. It is the beginning of the story.
Every cut in this pendant was made by hand. Every shape was worked slowly into being. There is no casting here, no factory neatness, no shortcut standing between the idea and the finished piece. Only tools, time, and the quiet discipline of bringing an image out of metal until it feels alive.
And this one does feel alive.
It has the atmosphere of moonlit grass and midnight thoughts. Of forest paths, festival nights, half-remembered myths, and those rare moments when the world seems to shimmer with more meaning than it should. It is a pendant for those drawn to the otherworldly — not as fashion, but as feeling. For those who have always sensed that beauty is deeper when it carries mystery.
