The “El-ahrairah, rabbit trickster folk hero” ring.
Watership down inspired jewellery is often what appears on my workbench regardless of what my original intent was when I set out to make something!
El-ahrairah is the central folk hero and trickster deity of the rabbit mythology featured in Richard Adams’s novel Watership Down. He is known as The Prince with a Thousand Enemies and his stories, told by the rabbit Dandelion, explain rabbit nature and provide hope. A key tale recounts how Frith (the sun-creator) blessed El-ahrairah’s powerful legs and white tail in return for his cunning, which allowed him to escape predators by playing dead and hiding, an adaptation that became a permanent feature of all rabbits.
El-ahrairah embodies the cunning trickster who uses wit and deception to overcome more powerful adversaries, rather than brute force. He represents the possibility of triumph for the rabbits, demonstrating that cleverness and bravery can overcome physical weakness. An icon of hope!
The stories of El-ahrairah’s adventures are a crucial part of rabbit lore, providing a spiritual and cultural foundation for the rabbit communities.
He is designated “The Prince with a Thousand Enemies”. This title, in the Lapine language, reflects the idea that while Frith made all the world El-ahrairah’s enemy, El-ahrairah’s cunning would ensure his people could never be destroyed.
I hand craft each ring using various traditional tools and techniques. As I am sure you are aware from looking through my work I have a special interest in hares and owls so this ring is filled with a great deal of nature inspired creative output! Other alternative stones may be available upon request, don’t hesitate to contact me. The emeralds in the picture particularly caught the light well. Typically they will look very lovely, but more of a deep dark interesting subtle green. If you really want permanently bright green eyes please let me know and it may be better to use peridot stones.
Each ring is carefully handcrafted to order, every feather and strand of hair is individually hand carved and cut using traditional hand tools. This time honoured process allows me to have a close connection to each piece, ensuring the end result is personal and unique. Handmade and recycled in Cambridge, England.
Each ring is completely unique, individual and original.
Size : approx 6mm * 14 mm.
