Moon Gazing Hare earrings – Recycled sterling silver shilling coins

These lovely moon and star gazing hare earrings have been recycled from two English sterling silver shillings. These coins are unwanted by coin collectors due to wear marks from being used to buy and sell over one hundred years ago.

Rather than let them simply be melted down for the silver content I absolutely love coming up with designs and ideas to transform them into something desirable. By doing this the historical details are retained, simultaneously adding depth, interest and intrigue to the design.

The hares have been individually hand cut from the silver shillings with a traditional jewellers saw.  Each pair is completely unique, contemporary, ethical and beautiful. They are presented complete with a sterling silver ‘off-cut’ which beautifully demonstrate the origins of the hares and connect them to their interesting, recycled material history.

The hare often embodies fertility, rebirth, and transformation, drawing upon ancient associations with spring, the moon, and love. It can also represent intuition, vigilance, and adaptability, as well as themes of mortality and luck. The hare’s elusive nature and swiftness contribute to its symbolic complexity, often appearing in contexts of both danger and magic.

Fertility and Rebirth:The hare’s prolific breeding and connection to spring have long linked it to fertility and renewal. In some traditions, hares are associated with goddesses of love and fertility like Aphrodite and Venus. Their ability to seemingly give birth without impregnation (due to superfetation) also contributed to this symbolism.

Transformation and Change:Like the changing seasons, the hare’s seasonal shedding of its coat and its swift movements symbolize transformation and adaptability. It can represent a call to embrace change and navigate life’s complexities with agility.
