Beltane spring goddess jewellery handmade and recycled silver coins
It was an absolutely joy creating this Beltane necklace. I have created and recycled her from three sterling silver coins circa 1880’s, which is absolutely lovely silver to work with. Each Beltane Spring Goddess I create has special secret details on the reverse for the wearer to know and enjoy.
Beltane is a Gaelic festival celebrating fire, fertility, and the triumph of life and warmth over winter’s death, symbolized by bonfires and the blossoming of nature. The fire represents purification and passion, while the blooming flowers embody the fertile power of the land and the birth of new ideas. The festival also features the symbolic union of the Earth and Sun and the Moon and a connection to the Faerie realm, reflecting ancient beliefs in magic, growth, and the vibrant energy of summer.
Bonfires are central to Beltane, symbolizing purification, passion, transformation, and the sun’s life-giving warmth. The ritualistic walking between twin fires offered protection and good fortune. The blooming of flowers signifies the earth’s fertility and life’s potential, while decorating with greenery and May bushes is believed to ward off evil and ensure abundance.
A vertical pole, often decorated with ribbons and greenery, represents the tree of life and fertility. Dancing in a sunwise (clockwise) direction around the maypole or bonfires symbolizes the sun’s journey and the renewal of life. The crowning of a May King and Queen is a ritualistic embodiment of the sacred union of masculine and feminine energies.
:
Beltane marks a thinning of the veil between the human and spirit worlds, when the mythical Faerie people or Tuatha Dé Danann are believed to be particularly active and influential. People leap over bonfires for personal purification and good luck, or as part of a symbolic sacrifice to the gods. Just as we did at the Cambridge Folk festival.
Beltane dew was considered magical, bestowing youth, beauty, and healing.
I use coins that are marred from wear marks from being used to buy and sell over one hundred years ago. Rather than let them simply be melted down for the silver content, I absolutely love coming up with designs and ideas. Then, I can transform them into a mystical Beltane goddess. By doing this, I retain the historical details, simultaneously adding depth, interest and intrigue to the design. I have individually hand-cut, carved and engraved the goddess from the silver coins with a traditional jewellers hand tools. As I hand-cut each coin individually to order, every one is completely unique and unusual. They look and feel special.
Size : Approx 40 mm * 28 mm
The Jenny Wren was a symbol of truth, wisdom and divinity for the Oak king.
