A little more detail…

The Silver Birch – The 1st 13th Moonth

Birch leaf earrings handcrafted using traditional hand tools and techniques.  Handmade from recycled silver shillings.

Silver shillings are recycled to craft these lovely Birch leaf earrings. These coins are unwanted by coin collectors due to wear marks from being used to buy and sell over one hundred years ago.

Rather than let them simply be melted down for the silver content I absolutely love coming up with designs and ideas to transform them into something desirable. By doing this the historical details are retained, simultaneously adding depth, interest and intrigue to the design.

The Birch leaves have been individually hand cut from the old ‘out of circulation’ coins with a traditional jewellers saw then carved and engraved .  For added interest an ‘off-cut’ surrounding coin is included with the earrings. The Birch leaves can also be engraved on the reverse with personal initials upon request.
Handmade and completely recycled in Cambridge, UK. Complete with the finest sterling silver earwires.

Size : Approx 20 mm * 13 mm

The silver birch tree aside from being a truely beautiful and otherworldly tree particularly represents new beginnings, purification, and resilience. It’s often associated with the cycle of life, death, and rebirth, symbolizing hope, protection, and the connection between the spiritual and physical worlds.

In Celtic mythology, the silver birch is strongly linked to new beginnings and purification, representing the end of winter and the start of spring. It’s a “pioneer” species, the first to colonize cleared land, thus embodying the concept of starting anew after a period of clearing or change. The tree is associated with the goddess Brigid, further emphasizing its connection to renewal and the start of the Celtic year. Its association with Beltane (May Day) celebrations reinforces its symbolism of spring and new life.

The silver birch’s white bark has long been associated with purity and cleansing. Branches were traditionally hung over doorways to protect homes and bring good luck.
In folklore, birch twigs were used for various rituals involving purification and warding off evil spirits.

Despite its delicate appearance, the silver birch is known for its hardiness and ability to thrive in various conditions, symbolizing inner strength and resilience.
The tree’s ability to regenerate after fire or clearing demonstrates its capacity for survival and adaptation.

In some traditions, the birch is believed to facilitate communication between the physical and spiritual realms. It’s associated with divination and seeking guidance from the spirit world. The tree’s presence in funerary practices, particularly in Ireland, suggests a connection to the afterlife and the journey of the soul.

Birch wreaths were used as love tokens and were associated with goddesses of love and fertility. In some folklore, birch is linked to marriage and fertility rituals.
