A little more detail…
- The silver birch is a pioneer species, one of the first trees to colonize disturbed areas and sprout new leaves in spring, making it a natural symbol of new beginnings, rebirth, and optimism.
- This is especially true in cultures that associate the birch with springtime festivals and the start of a new year, such as Celtic traditions where the birch was associated with the first month of the Celtic Tree Calendar.
- Birch bark’s strikingly white and peeling nature suggests purity and cleanliness.
- Historically, birch branches and water were used in rituals to purify spaces and people, linking the tree with cleansing and shedding the old to embrace the new.
- The silver birch is often called the “Lady of the Woods,” a reflection of its elegant, slender form and shimmering foliage that rustles gently in the breeze.
- Its delicate leaves and arched branches create a light and airy canopy, allowing light to filter through, symbolizing a delicate yet enduring beauty.
- Despite its delicate appearance, the silver birch is remarkably hardy and resilient, thriving even in harsh conditions and poor soils.
- This contrast between apparent fragility and underlying strength can be a powerful symbol in poetry, suggesting that true power lies not always in outward robustness but also in adaptability and inner fortitude.
- In Celtic traditions, the birch was considered a sacred tree, symbolizing the Tree of Life and the link between the spiritual and physical realms.
- Birch leaves and twigs were even used in divination rituals to seek guidance from the spirit world.
Birch leaf necklace – The Silver Birch – first of the Tree symbols
Birch leaf necklace handcrafted using traditional hand tools and techniques. Handmade from a recycled silver Victorian Shilling.
She is the first of the Tree symbols in the true 13 Month Moon calendar. Symbolising new beginnings, the start of a new cycle, ‘year’, stage. Bringing the associated feelings of fertility, hope and promise. This is confirmed in her ever young, vibrant look and sound. As the white goddess of the woods she is the first choice for a Beltane maypole or witches broom for sure. Her connection to the moon is something i’m always noticing when out in the woods or garden at night which I feel is the reason she brings in the first moon month. The monochrome silver moonlight (completely devoid of the colour spectrum!?!- which is interesting in itself) she reflects the wonders and importance of the moon.
The leaves I have created from a recycled silver coin are imbued with these connections and will make beautiful necklace and protection amulet. Each set is lovingly handcrafted to order and a delight to make.
The leaves are available as just the leaves to go on your own special chain, or on a adjustable cotton neckcord (variety of colours), on one of my chains with accompanying star, heart or moon?
Recycled in Cambridge. 100 year old+ Sterling silver coin.
Size : Approx 25 mm * 14 mm each
