Isle of Glass
Glastonbury Tor earrings – handcrafted using traditional hand tools and techniques. Handmade from recycled silver shillings.
Silver shillings are recycled to craft these lovely magical Tor earrings. These coins are unwanted by coin collectors due to wear marks from being used to buy and sell over one hundred years ago.
Rather than let them simply be melted down for the silver content I absolutely love coming up with designs and ideas to transform them into something desirable. By doing this the historical details are retained, simultaneously adding depth, interest and intrigue to the design.
The Glastonbury tor earrings have been individually hand cut from the old ‘out of circulation’ coins with a traditional jewellers saw then carved and engraved . For added interest an ‘off-cut’ surrounding coin is included with the earrings. The Glastonbury Tor comes complete with a celestial assortment of a pair of stars and moon. This allows you the option of wearing a traditional pair or alternatively an asymmetrical unique look.
Tor is an English word referring to a high rock or a hill, deriving from the Old English torr. The Celtic name of the Tor was Ynys Wydryn, or sometimes Ynys Gutrin, meaning “Isle of Glass”. At this time the plain was flooded, the isle becoming a peninsula at low tide. Once again our ancestors understood that the surface of water is level, even, like glass.
Handmade and completely recycled in Cambridge, UK.
