A little more detail…
This lovely stylised dancing hare brooch which would look fab on any attractive jacket. Inspired by the real thing which is fabulously dancing around outside the workshop.
Each spoon hare brooch is the result of recycling an old dessert spoon. To recycle and reuse these spoons i firstly clean them up, then plan and sketch the design onto the ‘bowl’ of the spoon.
Tentatively, tiny holes are drilled through the spoon at marked positions. These allow me to feed the miniature hand saw into the middle of the spoon, thus enabling to cut away the inside sections. The outline of the dancing hare design is then meticulously followed with the piercing saw. Once the wonderful Owl is ‘freed’ from the spoon it is filed and polished to a true finish.
The image of dancing and boxing hares evokes a rich tapestry of feelings. Hares are often associated with spring and the burgeoning life it brings forth. Their playful courtship dances, particularly in March, are seen as a celebration of the season’s fertility and the awakening of nature after winter’s slumber. Hares are a wonderful sight to many folk with spring, dawn, fertility and Easter. The dancing hares mark the joyous return and the resurgence of life as the sun moves closer.
The prolific nature of hares links them to themes of abundance, prosperity, and the creative potential of nature. Their dance represents the outpouring of life and the generative forces of the world. Hares are strongly linked to the moon and its cycles of waxing and waning, mirroring the themes of change and rebirth. Some legends even portray them as the moon’s companions or guardians. Their dance beneath the moon could be a ritualistic act connecting them to the celestial realm and its mystical energies.
In Celtic mythology, hares are viewed as sacred and mystical, believed to have connections to the Otherworld and the ability to shapeshift into human form. Their dance brings to the imagination the fluidity between worlds and the transformative power of nature. The hare’s swiftness and vigilance symbolize quick thinking and adaptability, but also intuition and the ability to perceive subtle cues. Their dance portrays a heightened awareness, a connection to inner wisdom and instinctual knowledge.
Hares embody a sense of wildness, freedom, and a connection to the untamed aspects of nature. Their lively dance speaks of unchecked joy, spontaneity, and a rejection of societal constraints. They are well known for their speed, agility, and elusive nature, adding to their mystique and symbolism. A dancing hare suggests a celebration of the unknown and the joy of embracing the unpredictable aspects of life.
An integral and interesting part of the brooch is the spoon from which it was cut. This simple ‘donor’ spoon is also given a little ‘Hairy Growler’ treatment. It is transformed in to an wonderful Objects D’ Art which acts a lovely resting place for the brooch when not being worn. Both are presented in a lovely box.
Dancing hare inspired brooch with wonderful credentials and a completely great conversation piece. Handmade and recycled in Cambridge.
