A little more detail…
Owl coin jewellery – Three recycled silver shillings.
Another pendant which is a joy and a priveledge to create. The Moonlit owl design is based around recycling three simple sterling silver shillings circa 1895. The resultant pendant is a lovely little lump of silver! As with all Hairy Growler jewellery each and every one ordered is completely unique, hand made and 100% recycled.
The design is freehand sketched onto the surface of the coins. A jewellers piercing saw is used to delicately cut and carve the design from the coins. The pendant is then gently filed, shaped, polished and oxidised to give it a brilliant silver finished contrasted with the black oxidisation of the midnight sky. It is finished with a bronze moon also cut from an 100 year old coin. The moon can be silver upon request.
You are welcome to request a simple inscription of initials on the reverse of the pendant. If this option is chosen i will use a much less detailed, but perhaps much older, i.e. 1800’s silver shilling for the reverse of the pendant. The worn details on the reverse will give me a surface to inscribe.
If no engraving is requested the reverse will be like the necklace in the picture. I will use a fab hostorically detailed coin, which will be a lovely little secret history for the wearer to share.

An owl amulet carries a powerful and multifaceted folklore symbolism, rooted in the bird’s connection to wisdom, mystery, the spiritual world, and protection. The charm channels the owl’s dual nature as both a source of profound insight and a harbinger of ill fortune, making it a potent object of folklore.
The owl’s silent flight and ability to see in the dark made it a symbol of deep wisdom and insight. An owl amulet is believed to enhance the wearer’s intuition and mental clarity. Just as an owl can see what is hidden in the dark, the amulet helps the wearer perceive truths that are obscured from others.
Linked to the goddess Athena (or Minerva in Roman mythology), the owl represents strategic thinking and foresight. An amulet can serve as a guide during difficult decisions, encouraging the wearer to use good judgment and not act impulsively.
The connection to knowledge and learning makes an owl charm a popular gift for students or graduates, symbolizing intellectual pursuits and the successful completion of an academic journey. Beyond wisdom, the owl amulet’s nocturnal nature and supernatural associations imbue it with protective qualities. As a hunter of the night, the owl is a guide through the darkness, both literal and metaphorical. For some Native American tribes, owls were regarded as messengers from the spirit world, offering guidance.
For the Celtic people, the owl acts as a guide to the Otherworld. An amulet can be a tangible connection to the spiritual realm and a source of insight into life’s deeper mysteries. An owl amulet functions as a rich symbol of hidden truths, deep intuition, and protection through life’s darkest moments. It is a metaphor for the wearer’s inner vision, their ability to perceive truth where others see only deception. The amulet represents a tangible link to ancient wisdom, worn close to the heart as a reminder of ancestral knowledge and the guidance of the spirit world. It is a charm for navigating uncertainty, a tool for finding courage and clarity when the path forward is obscured.
A delightful little curious barn owl pendant which has been lovingly and meticulously hand cut from a 100 year old silver shilling. Inspired by a quote by a prominent psychoanalyst Donald Woods Winnicott “Artists are people driven by the tension between the desire to communicate and the desire to hide”. Owls symbolise inner wisdom, transformation and change and bring with them foundations of luck.

Les, I had my eyes on this piece (Moonlit Owl) for a long time before ordering it, astounded by your design and craftsmanship. I am happy to say that it is even more impressive in person! I love it so much. It got here on Christmas Eve and I opened it on Christmas morning. It’s my first Hairy Growler piece, and it will not be my last. Thanks so much!
