The term “Paraclete” (from the Greek word παράκλητος, paraklētos) carries deep symbolic meaning within Christian theology, where it refers to the Holy Spirit. The word itself, meaning someone “called alongside” or “called to one’s aid,”.
At its core, the Paraclete is the third person of the Holy Trinity and embodies the role of a divine helper, standing alongside individuals during times of need.
This can be expressed through imagery of a comforting presence, a guiding voice, or a strong support in the face of adversity. This aspect of the Paraclete’s role is highlighted in the Gospel of John, where Jesus refers to the Holy Spirit as “another Advocate” (Paraclete) who will be sent by the Father.
The Paraclete is also identified as the “Spirit of Truth,” emphasizing its role in revealing divine wisdom and guiding believers toward a deeper understanding of God’s will and the teachings of Christ. The Paraclete’s function as a teacher and witness is stressed in John’s Gospel, where it reminds disciples of Jesus’ words and testify on his behalf.
The Paraclete empowers us to carry out God’s work in the world giving us courage, boldness, and the ability to act on behalf of the divine, even in the face of opposition.
The Paraclete transforms timid and fearful disciples into confident witnesses to the risen Christ. Ultimately, the Paraclete embodies the ongoing presence of God within the Christian community, guiding, teaching, comforting, and empowering believers in their journey of faith.
When He had been baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened to Him, and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting upon Him. – Matthew 3:16
