Handcrafted Guitar Plectrum Necklace Made from a 150-Year-Old Silver Coin

Some objects become part of us simply because we carry them every day.

A favourite coin.

A lucky charm.

A guitar pick worn smooth between finger and thumb.

Lucky Moon brings those ideas together in a guitar plectrum pendant handcrafted from an original British silver coin around 150 years old.

The old coin is cut, shaped and worked entirely by hand before being engraved with flowing Lucky lettering, scattered stars and a crescent moon pierced through the silver.

Part plectrum. Part talisman. Part old silver history.

Made for the Ones Who Play

There is something very personal about a guitar plectrum.

It is a tiny object, but for a musician it sits directly between the hand and the instrument.

It starts the vibration.

It finds the rhythm.

It turns movement into sound.

And like so many small things that accompany us through life, they have a habit of gathering memories.

A first guitar.

A favourite song.

A band that never quite made it.

A gig you still talk about.

Someone who taught you to play.

Or simply those hours when everyone else had gone to bed and there was just you, a guitar and a song you were determined to get right.

From Silver Coin to Guitar Plectrum

Lucky Moon does not begin as a piece of new silver sheet.

It begins with an old British silver coin.

Approximately 150 years separate the silver from the jewellery it has now become.

Rather than melting the coin down, I cut the plectrum directly from it.

Look at the reverse and traces of the original coin can still remain around the edges and across the surface.

That is important.

I want the finished pendant to reveal what it once was.

The history has not been erased. It has simply changed shape.

Lucky

Not because I believe jewellery can promise good fortune.

But because humans have carried small lucky objects for thousands of years.

Coins in pockets.

Charms around necks.

Stones picked up from particular places.

Objects given by people we love.

The magic is rarely in the object itself.

It is in the meaning we attach to it.

The Crescent Moon

A crescent moon is pierced completely through the upper part of the plectrum.

It transforms as the pendant moves.

Clothing, skin, darkness and daylight appear through the opening, constantly changing the moon’s background.

A crescent has long suggested transition, possibility and the beginning of another cycle.

Not the full moon at the height of its power.

The moon becoming.

A little reminder that unfinished does not mean incomplete.

Under a Sky of Stars

Small hand-cut and engraved stars scatter across the silver around the moon and lettering.

They give Lucky Moon the character of an old celestial charm rather than simply a piece of music jewellery.

There is something fitting about combining music and the night sky.

Both can make the world around us disappear for a while.

Both have a way of reaching places words sometimes cannot.

150 Years in the Making

The silver itself is part of the story.

When this coin was originally struck, the music being played, the instruments being built and the world in which people heard them were very different from today.

The coin survived all of it.

It passed out of circulation, escaped the melting pot and eventually arrived at my bench.

Now that same piece of old silver carries a symbol associated with music today.

One material. Two very different lives.

Made Slowly at the Hairy Growler Bench

Each plectrum is individually cut from an original antique silver coin.

The profile is shaped and refined by hand before the crescent moon is pierced through the silver using a fine jeweller’s saw.

The surface is then engraved with the Lucky lettering your choice, flowing scrollwork and individual stars.

Edges are softened and the pendant is finished while retaining enough of the old coin’s character to tell you where it came from.

No two antique coins have identical wear.

No two pieces of hand engraving are completely identical either.

That means every Lucky Moon develops its own character.

Those differences are part of the piece, not something to be removed from it.
