The combination of the witch and the raven in creates a potent symbol of ancient wisdom, mystery, transformation, and defiance. The pairing amplifies the core symbolic traits of each figure, weaving a narrative that links magic, the spirit world, and the untamed aspects of nature.

The witch subverts traditional patriarchal roles, embodying feminine power that is often considered wild, ancient, and feared by the dominant culture. She possesses knowledge of herbs, nature, and spells, which can be used for both healing and cursing, representing the dual nature of power. She lives on the fringes of society, deeply connected to the natural world, understanding its rhythms and secrets.

With its dark plumage and uncanny intelligence, the raven serves as a messenger between the mortal world and the spirit world, the realm of the dead, or the gods.
Prophecy and knowledge: The Norse god Odin famously had two ravens, Huginn (thought) and Muninn (memory), who flew across the world gathering knowledge for him.As a carrion bird, the raven is linked to death and loss, but also with the cyclical nature of rebirth that comes after death.

In Indigenous mythologies of the Pacific Northwest, Raven is a complex figure, sometimes a benevolent creator who brings light to the world, and other times a selfish and mischievous trickster. In literature like Shakespeare’s Macbeth and Poe’s “The Raven,” the bird appears as a harbinger of ill fortune and sorrow.

When paired, the witch and raven are more than the sum of their parts. The raven often serves as a witch’s familiar, a spiritual assistant that assists in her magic. Both exist on the boundaries—the witch on the edge of the village, the raven on the threshold between life and death. Together, they represent the crossing of these boundaries, mediating between order and chaos, day and night, civilization and wilderness.

The raven acts as the witch’s eyes and memory, allowing her to see things from a different perspective and access hidden knowledge. It is her thought and memory made visible, an extension of her mystical power. The raven’s black color complements the witch’s often dark, mysterious persona. This color symbolism ties their magic to the shadow self, the unseen, and the hidden potential of the unconscious mind.

Their partnership represents a bond of power that exists outside of societal norms. It is a rebellion against established structures, with the raven’s wild, untamable nature mirroring the witch’s own rejection of conformity. It speaks to deeper human themes of hidden wisdom, forbidden knowledge, and the wild power that lies just beyond the edges of the known world.

Each pendant requires many miniature holes to be drilled and the piercing saw to be fed into these holes to cut away all the small sections. The pendant is carefully and gradually crafted from the centre of the old out of circulation fifty pence coin. Once the shaping cuts have been made the enormously time consuming task of hand carving and engraving begins!

Her fabulous witches hat is complete with a 24ct Gold buckle inlaid by hand into the coin.  The gold is pure and recycled.  It looks and feels very lovely.  It is not plated or imitation! it is a wee nugget that I have hammered in and then carved into a buckle.
