A little more detail…

The Moonlit Chase

A Leaping Hare Beneath a Moon and Star, Built One Ring at a Time

Some jewellery tells its story in a single piece.

This one needed three.

A hare runs through the darkness.

A crescent moon hangs above her.

A solitary star follows.

Each exists on its own hand-worked ring.

Wear one.

Wear two.

Or bring all three together and something rather lovely happens.

The rings become a landscape.

A tiny piece of the night wrapped around your finger.

A Hairy Growler Signature Stack

The Moonlit Chase sits somewhere between jewellery and storytelling.

Each ring is deliberately individual.

The moon has its own band.

The star has its own band.

The hare has hers.

But they have been designed to live together.

Stack them and the bands become the horizon.

The hare runs beneath the moon.

The star appears at her shoulder.

Turn your hand and the composition changes again.

It is not simply a set of stacking rings. It is a scene you assemble yourself.

Choose Your Night Sky

You can build The Moonlit Chase around the symbols that mean something to you.

The Leaping Hare

Movement.

Instinct.

Freedom.

Wildness.

The hare is captured in that extraordinary moment when all four feet seem to leave the earth.

Not sitting.

Not watching.

Running.

There is something wonderfully untameable about a hare in full flight.

She seems to belong to neither field nor sky, but to the space between them.

The Crescent Moon

The moon changes the story.

Add it above the hare and suddenly the landscape becomes nocturnal.

The crescent has long been associated with cycles, intuition, change and renewal.

It is never quite still.

Growing.

Fading.

Disappearing.

Returning.

A little reminder that change is not the opposite of continuity. It is part of it.

The Star

Smallest of the three, perhaps.

But not insignificant.

A single star has long carried associations with guidance, hope and finding a way through darkness.

Placed beside the moon and hare, it becomes the final point of light in the scene.

A little north point for your own story.

One Ring, Two Rings or the Whole Story

The beauty of a stacking collection is that there is no single correct way to wear it.

Choose the hare alone and you have a wonderfully simple piece of woodland jewellery.

Add the moon and the hare begins to run through the night.

Add the star and the landscape is complete.

Or choose moon and star without the hare.

Wear them together.

Separate them.

Change their order.

Move one to another finger.

Add another later.

Your stack does not have to remain the way it began.

The Hare Between Worlds

Few animals occupy the Hairy Growler world quite like the hare.

It is a real creature of British fields and woodland edges, yet for centuries it has also occupied another landscape.

The landscape of folklore.

Hares have been associated with the moon, fertility, transformation, intuition, spring and the mysterious boundary between the ordinary world and something older.

They appear in stories of shapeshifting.

They run through folk belief and superstition.

They become companions to moon goddesses and creatures of twilight.

And perhaps part of their mystery comes simply from seeing one.

A hare does not usually hang around to explain itself.

You glimpse it.

It runs.

And suddenly the field is empty again.

Half animal. Half apparition.

Running Beneath the Moon

The relationship between hare and moon is ancient and widespread.

Different cultures have seen hares and rabbits in the markings of the moon, connected them with lunar deities, or woven them into stories of transformation and rebirth.

That association feels especially natural here.

The hare on this ring is not simply placed beside a decorative crescent.

She appears to be travelling beneath it.

Running through that strange hour when familiar countryside becomes something else.

Branches become silhouettes.

Fields disappear into darkness.

The moon catches silver.

And somewhere beyond the hedge…

a hare is moving.

Wandering in the Moonlight

The original idea for this piece carried a name I still rather love.

Wandering in the Moonlight.

That feeling remains within The Moonlit Chase.

It is the feeling of being outside when everybody else seems to have gone home.

The path still exists, but it looks different.

The trees seem taller.

The familiar becomes mysterious.

And for a little while, the woodland belongs to its nocturnal inhabitants again.

A Landscape That Moves

One of my favourite things about this piece is that the scene never stays completely still.

These are individual rings.

They move against one another.

The moon may shift.

The star may disappear partly behind the hare.

The hare may move slightly forward.

The composition changes as your hand moves.

I could have fixed everything permanently into one arrangement.

But I think that would lose something.

A wild landscape ought to move.

Made as Individual Rings

Each element is made as a separate piece rather than being manufactured as a single solid ring.

That gives the stack its character.

Look closely and the bands are not mechanically identical.

They carry texture.

Tiny changes in the surface.

Evidence of tools.

Evidence of hands.

The hare itself is individually worked and refined rather than reduced to a perfectly sterile silhouette.

The little irregularities are part of the piece.

Made Slowly at the Hairy Growler Bench

This is jewellery made at a bench rather than designed for a production line.

The bands are formed individually.

Surfaces are worked by hand.

The moon is shaped.

The star is formed.

The hare is cut, refined and given her character.

Then the individual elements are brought together and tested as a stack.

It is a slower process.

But slow is useful.

Slow gives you time to notice when the angle of an ear needs changing.

When a curve needs softening.

When a texture needs another pass with a tool.

Slow is where much of the character gets in.

Three Symbols, Three Stories

The hare, moon and star can each carry their own meaning.

For one person the hare may represent freedom.

For another, transformation.

The moon might mark a new beginning.

The star might remember someone.

Or perhaps none of that is necessary.

Perhaps you simply like the thought of a hare running through the moonlight.

That is enough too.

Jewellery does not need to explain itself to everybody else.

Made to Change With You

Handmade rings become personal through wear.

Freshly finished metal gradually softens.

Tiny marks appear.

High points polish themselves against everyday life.

Textures deepen.

The individual bands settle against one another.

I don’t think that makes jewellery old.

I think it makes it yours.

The first marks are mine. The next ones belong to you.

A Little Piece of the Hairy Growler Woodland

The hare appears again and again in my work.

Sometimes she sits beneath a moon.

Sometimes she hides inside an old coin.

Sometimes two hares meet.

And here she runs.

These are not intended to be identical versions of the same animal.

I think of them more like different sightings.

Different moments in the same imagined landscape.

The same woodland. Another night.

A Hairy Growler Canon Piece

Three little rings.

That is all it really is.

Until you put them together.

Then the horizon appears.

A moon rises.

A star waits in the darkness.

And the hare begins to run.

Perhaps she is running towards something.

Perhaps away.

Perhaps neither.

Perhaps she is simply doing what wild things have always done while the rest of us are sleeping.

Moving through the fields.

Crossing the old paths.

Slipping between woodland and open ground.

Running beneath the same moon that has watched generations before us.

Then morning comes.

The landscape becomes ordinary again.

But around your finger, the little night continues.

The Moonlit Chase.

The hare runs. The moon follows. The star knows the way.
