A little more detail…
This lovely, unusually shaped coin was issued with two designs. This, the thistle / thrift design is the finest, especially when the background has been delicately cut away, leaving the thrifts proudly at the fore front. Each coin is hand pierced with a small jewellers saw. The pattern on the coin is followed faithfully. Each coin is the result of time, patients and enjo yment. A lovely pendant for anyone. You are welcome to choose the version with just the lovely ‘thrift’ or the more intricately carved version with the ‘Threepence’ lettering.

The thrift flower (also known as sea pink or cliff clover) is rich with cultural symbolism, drawing heavily from its hardy nature and the environments it thrives in.
Its ability to flourish in harsh coastal environments – facing strong winds, salty air, and poor soil – makes it a powerful symbol of strength and tenacity in the face of adversity. The delicate pink, white, or purple blooms that appear on the tough plants symbolize finding beauty and hope even in challenging or unexpected places.
In the UK, thrift has come to represent resourcefulness and perseverance, reflecting the landscapes it calls home. It appeared on the British threepence coin from 1937-1952 as a reminder of the importance of being “thrifty” during tough times like wartime and post-war recovery.
Its prevalence along coastlines has led to associations with maritime culture and folklore. In Gaelic, it’s called “tonna chladaich,” meaning “beach wave,” a name that evokes its presence on cliffs and saltmarshes. It can also symbolize the enduring spirit of coastal life.
In ancient times, due to its hardy nature, Sea thrift was sometimes considered a guardian plant associated with protection and healing.
For me the thrift flower represents a character who overcomes difficulties and finds strength in challenging circumstances. It also points towards the quiet beauty and resilience of nature that can be found even in seemingly inhospitable places. A symbol of hope and perseverance, reminding readers of the potential for growth and flourishing despite adversity.

History!
History around my neck! This reminds me of my Scottish grandma who spoke of thrupney bits! Thanks for the memory!

Hard work appreciated
I love the detail in this piece. I am studying silversmithing at my local art college and dived in feet first and tried to do one of these for myself. Not an easy task when you are new to piercing, and these are such thick coins to work with!Needless to say I gave up after a lot of saw blades and frustration.
I appreciate how much time must go in to each of these pieces, they are beautiful and well worth the price 🙂

Wonderful!
Purchased this item to celebrate my 50th birthday and to commemorate my Mum who sadly passed at 48yrs old. So I chose her birth year for this item and went for the full cutout showing the THREE PENCE as it looked better I think. Was very pleased when it arrived, it is everything you see in the photos. A lovely and unusual piece to wear for many years to come.
