A little more detail…
Mermaid necklace – Ethically handmade and Recycled silver Half-Crown coin
Mermaids symbolize a wide range of ideas, including the dual nature of life (both beautiful and dangerous), the allure of the unknown, femininity, temptation, freedom, transformation, and emotional depth. As mystical creatures of the ocean, they are often associated with subconscious states, the wild, untamed aspects of nature, and the complex journey of self-discovery and spiritual renewal.
Mermaids represent the simultaneous presence of beauty and peril, mirroring the seductive yet destructive nature of the sea itself. Their enchanting appearance can symbolize temptation, leading to the loss of one’s rational self or life, as seen in the myth of sirens.
As beings of the deep ocean, they embody the mystery and unexplored depths of the world and human experience. Their connection to the water signifies the subconscious, representing hidden depths of feeling and intuition.
Mermaids are often seen as symbols of the wild feminine, a force that is both nurturing and powerful. Their unique form, bridging human and aquatic worlds, makes them a potent symbol of personal transformation, self-discovery, and evolution.
Mermaids are often depicted as wistful beings, expressing a deep longing for something beyond their reach, such as freedom from the sea or human connection. They are also closely linked to the overwhelming and uncontrollable power of nature, particularly the ocean, which can be both life-giving and devastating.
Their association with water also positions them as symbols of renewal, emotional healing, and the wisdom to navigate life’s emotional challenges
This gorgeous mermaid pendant has been carefully and lovingly crafted from an old sterling silver English half Crown coin. The majority of coins circulated over a hundred years ago are pure silver and the ones that are still remaining are in poor condition, from the point of view of a coin collector. The coins are thus only valued for their inherent scrap silver value, which is obviously a real shame. They are definitely the sort of coins you would find at the bottom of the ocean in a lost treasure trove!
Rather than the coins being melted, i like to flatten the coins and use the history and life of the coin as an extra element of interest and beauty. The resultant sterling silver mermaid pendant is suspended from a delicate, unobtrusive, yet ultra strong silver chain. Within her grasp is a beautifully handcrafted cut horse of the sea.
SIZE : Approx 45mm * 20mm

This is a fabulous piece – bought for my Mermaid-mad daughter Rowan who absolutely loved it. I requested that her name be engraved on the reverse and The Hairy Growler also added a Rowan leaf (as he had already made a Rowan/Bird necklace and Rowan leaf earrings for her). Each piece of jewellery is unique and makes a wonderful and special heirloom to be treasured. I can not recommend his work highly enough. ❤️
