A little more detail…
This beautiful brooch is a design i have been making for many years but it just keeps getting better and better the more i create it. The triple hare motif is prevalent in many cultures for over 1000 years of history, probably many more!
The three-leaf shamrock encompasses the Holy Trinity representing faith, hope, and love. It also draws from ancient Celtic traditions, symbolizing a sacred triad of land, sea, and sky, and the cyclical nature of life, death, and rebirth, signifying balance and spiritual growth. As a national emblem, it signifies Ireland’s unity and resilience, connecting its ancient pagan beliefs with its later Christian identity.
The most famous association comes from St. Patrick, who is said to have used the three leaves on a single stem to explain the concept of the Holy Trinity—one God with three distinct persons—to the ancient Celts.
In ancient Celtic culture, the number three held significant spiritual meaning. The shamrock’s three leaves symbolized the sacred triad of the universe—land, sea, and sky—and the cyclical nature of life, death, and rebirth. The interconnectedness of the three leaves on one stem represents balance and harmony in life and the universe.
The shamrock’s enduring nature and its connection to cycles symbolize eternal spiritual growth. As a powerful symbol of Ireland, the shamrock signifies the nation’s unity, pride, and resilience, especially its ability to overcome obstacles while honoring its rich history and traditions
It is a tricky design to successfully make but one which is very special when finished. The origins of the brooch are clearly visible and the design is very striking. Using a fine nibbed marker pen a quick layout sketch with registration points is dropped on to the surface of the three threepence coins. I then meticulously cut away the hares with a traditional jewellers saw. Once the details are cut the coins are fused into the three ‘leaflet’ clover / shamrock. A nice piece of fork prong is used for the finishing stem.
I handcut each coin individually to create this three coin brooch, as a result each one is completely unique and unusual. They look and feel very special. You are welcome to choose the triple hare or Clàrsach harp design.
