A little more detail…
The Rowan – Tree of wizzards.
Rowan leaf earrings – handmade and recycled from silver shillings.
Silver shillings are recycled to craft these lovely Rowan leaf earrings. These coins are unwanted by coin collectors due to wear marks from being used to buy and sell over one hundred years ago.
Rather than let them simply be melted down for the silver content I absolutely love coming up with designs and ideas to transform them into something desirable. By doing this the historical details are retained, simultaneously adding depth, interest and intrigue to the design.
The rowan leaves have been individually hand cut from the old ‘out of circulation’ coins with a traditional jewellers saw then carved and engraved .
For added interest an ‘off-cut’ surrounding coin is included with the earrings. The rowan leaves can also be engraved on the reverse with personal initials upon request.
Handmade and completely recycled in Cambridge, UK. Complete with the finest sterling silver earwires. Size : Approx 33 mm * 8 mm
The rowan tree, also known as mountain ash and is associated with protection, wisdom, and life force. It’s frequently depicted in folklore as a guardian against evil spirits and a symbol of resilience. Its bright red berries and connection to Celtic and Norse mythology further enhance its poetic presence.
The rowan was traditionally planted near homes or in churchyards to ward off witches, evil spirits, and other malevolent forces.
Celtic mythology associates the rowan with wisdom and courage, often seen as a tree that offers guidance and strength. The vibrant red berries, coupled with the tree’s ability to thrive in harsh environments, symbolize life, resilience, and the enduring power of nature.
The rowan’s association with fairy lore and its use in rituals highlight its connection to the spiritual realm and the unseen forces of nature. (The five pointed star at the bottom of each red berry always makes me smile.)
In Norse legends, a rowan tree, named “Embla,” was associated with the creation of the first woman, further emphasizing its role in representing humanity and life itself.
Ogham:
The rowan is associated with the Ogham letter “luis” or “luis” (sometimes “on”), representing fire, inspiration, and purification
