The Goodluck Coin Ring

The tiny ring glitters in dusky half-light,

Desperately delicate in the dirty hands of the soldier

He blinks, wiping mud out his eyes,

Relaxing in the brief respite from the rain and guns and terror.

 

The coin ring, wrought by his own hands, shines,

Summoning memories as colourful as the sunset.

A girl, teeth white against rosy cheeks, laughing.

A golden spaniel springing through daisies

Warm cups of tea, safe against the winter’s cold.

 

Then, he is back.

Back in the trenches, back in uniform,

Mud and bullets and blood smearing

Into a blackish collage on the ground.

A gun on his back, shells whining overhead.

 

The war must go on.

For those he left behind,

For the girl who is his past and future,

For his safety, his home.

For them, the war must go on.

For them, he will fight.

So he lifts his rifle, and trudges back out

Into the rain.

Good luck Ring – Recycled Silver Coins

The goodluck coin ring. These beautiful contemporary and eco-conscious good luck rings don’t cost the earth, literally and actually. They combine reasonable prices with eco-conscious and ethical creation.  They are available in all sizes, and each one is handcrafted to order from sterling silver British coins.

Coins minted before 1920 in Britain (and many other countries) are sterling silver. During the World Wars, some soldiers would take these precious coins and transform them into coin rings for loved ones and to remind themselves of loved ones back ‘at home’. The resourcefulness of these soldiers is admirable and inspiring, and resurfaces in my work as a silversmith with green ethics looking to create original and unusual wearable pieces of art. Trench art to recycled art, history given form again.

The outside surface of the ring is meticulously hand filed, sanded and polished to a high lustre. This gives the ring a perfect surface to then carve the pair of lucky four leaf clovers.  On the inside of the ring, the true nature of the traditional coin is clearly visible. This hidden detail completes the circle. There is no ‘join’ in these rings which is another reason they are just perfect as wedding bands: they are an ‘unbroken circle’, depicting true, unrelenting and undiminishing love through good times and bad.

Smaller size rings are made using sterling silver Sixpences and Shillings. Medium size rings are made using Shillings and Florins, whilst larger rings are made using Florins and Halfcrowns. From the drop-down menu you are able to request a specific width. Below are a list of the maximum widths for each coin when transformed into a ring. You are welcome to request thinner bands for each coin, but not wider than stated.

 

Sizes : Approx

Sixpences : 4 mm wide.

Shillings : 7mm wide.

Florins : 9mm – 10mm wide.

Halfcrowns : 10mm – 12 wide.

NECKLACE INFORMATION

Many of the necklace / pendant designs are complete. These designs have a sterling silver chain attached to the pendant from both sides. This design is perfect for looking in a mirror to fasten the necklace. It also makes a fabulous feature of the handmade hook catch (and star if chosen).  The necklace length you choose includes the length of the actual pendant. Do not worry about the pendant dimensions we will take care of your order. Order the necklace length you would normally wear and the necklace you receive will sit in the perfect position..

Large size : approx 210 mm (good size if you want a looser dangly medium fit)
