Love dove jewellery – handmade, ethical, Recycled 100 year old silver coins
Two doves represent eternal love, lifelong faithfulness, and unwavering devotion, particularly highlighted by the turtle dove’s monogamous pairing for life. This symbolism is deeply rooted in literature, folklore, and mythology, where these birds are depicted as symbols of pure love, often associated with goddesses of love like Aphrodite, and representing peace, new beginnings, and the comforting presence of loved ones.
The core of the two love doves necklace is their lifelong monogamous bond. Unlike many other birds, doves are known for pairing for life, making them a powerful symbol of true, committed, and eternal love. Doves also represent peace, purity, and hope. In many cultures, releasing a pair of doves at weddings symbolizes the beginning of a new life together and the enduring commitment between the couple. The gentle cooing and romantic behavior of doves have been seen as a powerful sign of love and support from loved ones, both living and departed, providing comfort and encouragement.
In Greek and Roman mythology, doves were associated with the goddess of love, Aphrodite (Venus). Their constant togetherness made them a perfect emblem for romantic partnerships and enduring affection.
The dove also holds spiritual significance, representing the soul and the Holy Spirit in Christian traditions. A pair of doves can symbolize the joining of two families or the journey of spiritual union. A lovely wedding verse goes like this “this pair of doves symbolize the love and devotion that will grow through your years together”.
This gorgeous ‘love-doves’ necklace has been carefully and lovingly crafted from three sterling silver English shilling coins circa 1880’s. The majority of coins circulated over a hundred years ago are pure silver and the ones that are still remaining are in poor condition, from the point of view of a coin collector. The coins are thus only valued for their inherent scrap silver value, which is obviously a real shame. So rather than them being melted i like to flatten the coins and use the history and life of the coin as an extra element of interest and beauty.
The resultant sterling silver love doves necklace is suspended from a delicate unobtrusive silver chain. After a final polish the pendant is finished with a cute bronze star cut from an old three pence.
