Forget me not sixpence necklace

Recycled sterling silver sixpence

These lovely little lucky sixpence flower charms are a great gift for yourself or anyone you know who, well anyone really!! Each one is handcrafted from a genuine sterling silver pre 1919 English silver sixpence. The central floret is made from pure 24ct Gold, a little nugget inlaid in the middle.

Sterling silver was the choice material of all English Threepence’s, Sixpence’s, Shilling’s, Florins, Half-Crowns and Crown coins before 1919. This presents a great opportunity to create precious metal recycled jewellery.

The vast majority of these coins have suffered substantial wear over their years of circulation. It is these coins which are not valued by most coin collectors. In most cases these coins are acquired to be melted down for the basic silver value. This disappointing truth means that all of the history, detailsand interest of the coin are lost forever. Recycling the coins allows these original details to survive and become conversation. Obviously it is important for the piece of jewellery to be desirable, wearable and beautiful!

Handcrafted and recycled in Cambridge, UK Size : Approx 19 mm diameter

This petit French flower has both romantic and familial connotations perfectly suitable for a little silver gift. Each pair is completely unique, contemporary, ethical and beautiful. I present the earrings with a sterling silver ‘off-cut’ which connects them to their history. Sizes approx : 12mm

Forget-me-not flowers, small and delicate and touch on themes of love, loss, remembrance, loyalty, and the enduring nature of human connection.

Remembrance is the most significant and deeply rooted meaning of the forget-me-not. The flower is a poignant symbol of honoring the memory of loved ones, cherished moments, and bonds that persist beyond physical presence or even death. These lovely flowers evoke nostalgia, grief, and the bittersweet nature of holding onto memories, particularly when referring to those lost or absent.

Forget-me-nots are deeply intertwined with the concept of true, unwavering love and fidelity. They symbolize a love that withstands distance and time, a promise to remember and stay devoted to one another. Legends often depict the flower’s name arising from a knight’s dying words to his beloved, reinforcing this association with eternal love and devotion. They are a common symbol for lasting love, especially during separations, whether due to long journeys or in the context of remembering the deceased.

Beyond romantic love, forget-me-nots also symbolize the strength and longevity of friendships and other meaningful connections. They can be exchanged as tokens of affection and loyalty among friends, representing bonds that are not easily broken or forgotten.

With their delicate yet resilient nature, forget-me-nots can also symbolize hope and optimism. Their vibrant blue hue can evoke a sense of calm and positivity, encouraging resilience and looking towards the future. The flower’s name can also serve as a reminder to not forget one’s own inner strength, dreams, and purpose.

In some spiritual traditions, forget-me-nots represent a connection to the divine or departed souls. They can be used to symbolize the spiritual interconnectedness among individuals, offering comfort and a sense of perpetual presence to those grieving.

The modest size and understated beauty of the forget-me-not can also be interpreted as representing humility and the appreciation of life’s simple pleasures.
The name Myosotis, from Greek words meaning “mouse ear,” reflects the flower’s humble appearance.

My second piece from Hairy Growler

I needed something so personal and special as a memento to remember my dearest bro. Something personal and special is precisely what I got. I haven’t taken it off since it arrived. Thank you so, so much.

    Most wonderful Christmas present!

I received this beautiful pendant as a Christmas present off my partner and it is absolutely perfect! I put it on straight away and on it has remained, I’ve not stopped looking at it either. The work that has gone into this to transform it from a sixpence is fantastic, I love how you can still see some original detail and the story behind it is wonderful.

My partner had this engraved with his initials on the reverse and upon closer inspection some of the surviving detail also shows my Grandmothers initials clear as day (IMP, from the old latin that was around the edge) making this piece even more special and treasurable!

I am so very thankful to Hairy Growler, this is truly a piece I will cherish for life.
