The Blackbird flies with panic,

The Swallows go like light,

The Finches move like ladies,

The Owls float by at night.

But the great & flashing Magpie

He flies as artists might

A Little more detail…

Magpie brooch – handmade and recycled spoon jewellery.

Each one of these special brooches is handmade from an old unwanted vintage spoon. Using a marker pen a quick inspired sketch is dropped on to the surface of the spoon. I then meticulously carve away the design with a traditional hand engraving tool and cut details using a traditional jewellers saw. Once the details are cut the brooch is given an extremely bright polishing which really brings the magpie to life.

As I hand cut each bee individually to order every one is completely unique and unusual. They look and feel special.  The engraved ‘off-cut’ spoon is included with the brooch

The Magpie is fabulous folk symbol for those of us who enjoy collecting treasure and looking well.  The Magpie is suspended from a lovely Flourish chain in a limited edition antique patina finish usually reserved for Omnia chains.  The connection between the chain and Magpie pendant is a tiny ring made from with recycled silver or gold and set with a lovely Emerald, Ruby or Sapphire.  This wee ring represents and is the treasure we love to collect and own and the Magpie is our spirit; “he flies as artists might” size : 45 mm * 40 mm

Magpies, with their striking black and white plumage and distinctive calls, are rich in symbolic meaning, particularly in folklore, art, literature, poetry and Newcastle of course. They are often associated with both good and bad luck, intelligence, and even trickery, with the “One for Sorrow” rhyme being a classic example of their perceived prophetic nature.

The most common association is with the rhyme “One for sorrow, two for joy,” which dictates that seeing one magpie signifies sorrow, while seeing two brings joy. The rhyme continues with variations for other numbers, often indicating a birth, a death, or a secret. This duality in luck is a recurring theme in magpie lore.

Magpies are renowned for their intelligence and problem-solving abilities, even demonstrating self-recognition in mirror tests. This has led to them being seen as symbols of wisdom, cleverness, and resourcefulness. However, their tendency to collect shiny objects has also led to them being seen as tricksters or even thieves, especially where jewellery is concerned!

In some interpretations, magpies represent adaptability and the ability to thrive in various environments. Their year-round presence in many regions, even in harsh weather, highlights their resilience. Magpies are linked to communication of secrets, and even the connection between the conscious and unconscious mind. In some cultures, they are seen as bridges between worlds or symbols of fantasy.

William Shakespeare alludes to the magpie’s “pied” (multicolored) plumage and its association with thievery in his works.

Newcastle United Football Club’s black and white striped kit, adopted in 1894, led to the nickname “The Magpies”. The club’s mascot, Monty, embodies the team’s spirit and connection to the fans. The magpie represents the enduring spirit of the toon army.
