A little more detail…
The image of the moon-gazing hare resonates deeply within the collective unconscious, making it a powerful and versatile symbol for to explore a wide array of human emotions and experiences. For me the moon gazing hare creates an atmosphere of mystery, enchantment, or spiritual contemplation. Symbolizing hope, new beginnings, and the potential for transformation. Whilst conveying a sense of peace, stillness, and a moment of quiet reflection under the night sky.
Connection to the Divine and the Feminine: Hares, particularly those gazing at the moon, are strongly associated with lunar goddesses and the divine feminine in many ancient traditions. The moon itself is often a symbol of feminine energy, intuition, and the cycles of life, death, and rebirth. A moon-gazing hare in poetry can evoke a sense of connection to these powerful forces, the mystical, and a reverence for nature’s mysteries.
Fertility, Rebirth, and New Beginnings: Hares are known for their prolific breeding, making them potent symbols of fertility, abundance, and the regenerative power of life. Coupled with the moon’s cyclical nature and its link to new beginnings, the moon-gazing hare can represent the promise of growth, renewal, and the emergence of fresh opportunities.
Intuition, Dreams, and the Unconscious: Hares are often considered creatures of the night, a time associated with dreams, the subconscious, and heightened intuition. The act of gazing at the moon can symbolize a contemplative state, a deep connection to inner knowing, and a receptiveness to the intuitive whispers of the universe
Transformation and the Cycle of Life: The moon’s phases represent the ongoing cycles of change and transformation. The hare, with its swiftness and sometimes elusive nature, also embodies transformation and the journey of life. The image of a moon-gazing hare can evoke these themes, portraying a moment of introspection and reflection within the larger dance of existence
Good Fortune and Abundance: In some pagan traditions, encountering a moon-gazing hare was believed to bring good fortune and prosperity. This positive association can be woven into poetry to convey blessings, hope, and the promise of a bountiful future.
A pair of recycled silver shillings
Another pendant which is a joy and a priveledge to create. The Moon Gazing hares design is based around recyling a pair of sterling silver shillings circa 1900. The resultant pendant is a lovely little lump of lapin silver! As with all Hairy Growler jewellery each and every one ordered is completely unique, hand made and 100% recycled.
The design is freehand sketched onto the surface of the coins. A jewellers piercing saw is used to delicately cut and carve the design from the coins. The pendant is then gently filed, shaped, polished and oxidised to give it a brilliant silver finished contrasted with the black oxidisation of the midnight sky.
You are welcome to request a simple inscription of initials on the reverse of the pendant. If this option is chosen i will use a much less detailed, but perhaps much older, i.e. 1800’s silver shilling for the reverse of the pendant. The worn details on the reverse will give me a surface to inscribe. You are also welcome to select what you would like growing in the field. Choose a wild mushroom, wonderful ‘love grows’ flower or simply wild grass.
The moon gazing hares shilling is presented on either a fab sterling silver necklace with a handmade shepards crook safety catch and accompanying wee star, moon or heart… or a simple but lovely adjustable braided cotton necklace cord.
If no engraving is requested the reverse will be like the necklace in the picture. I will use a fab hostorically detailed coin, which will be a lovely little secret history for the wearer to share.

Stunningly Beautiful Work
I am beyond impressed by the exquisite detail of this piece. The workmanship is impeccable and the design is truly unique. The shop even engraved the back with my rabbit’s name — Aviv. The sentimental value this piece has for me is reinforced by the obvious effort and extraordinary skill that went into it.

Made my wife’s Christmas
Got this piece of jewellery for my wife as a Christmas present. Didn’t see it in the flesh until she opened it on Christmas day well it looks even better close up than in the pictures she is so happy with it and I am over the moon. The Hairy Growler is a very skilled craftsman but that could be said of lots of people but I think what sets him apart is his eye for detail and artistic ideas that are interesting and beautiful to behold.
Thanks for making a great Christmas even more special.
