A little more detail…
Mr Badger is grounded in its earthy resilience, nocturnal existence, and fierce, protective nature. This combination has led cultures across the world to see it as a symbol of grounding, courage, healing, and the hidden wisdom of the earth. With powerful claws, the badger is a master excavator, burrowing deep into the earth. This trait symbolizes determination, perseverance, and the resolve to work hard until a goal is achieved.
A badger, when under threat will fight fiercely and never surrender, reminding people to invoke their own “warrior courage” when facing obstacles. As a creature that lives underground, the badger is a powerful earth symbol, representing grounding and stability. Its presence can be a reminder to stay focused and put down roots in one’s life.
The badger’s digging ability also represents an ability to see beyond the surface of things, revealing hidden truths and wisdom. It is a symbol for diving deep into a problem to find its core. In Native American folklore, the badger is a protector of medicinal plants and herbs found in the earth, linking it to healing and curative abilities.
The badger is fiercely territorial and protective of its burrow, or “sett,” and its family. This makes it a strong symbol of guardianship, especially regarding home and family. Among the Zuni, the badger is considered a powerful healing animal, with knowledge of curative roots. It is also linked to the shamanic practice of digging into the earth for guidance.
As a nocturnal animal, the badger is associated with the mysteries of the night and the unseen, lending it an air of secrecy and enigmatic wisdom. In some Irish and Japanese myths, badgers are portrayed as supernatural shape-shifters, reflecting their elusive and mysterious nature. In Japanese folklore, the mujina, a type of shapeshifting monster, is often portrayed with badger-like features.
The badger has been brought to life in literature, most notably as the respectable, elderly, and wise Mr. Badger in Kenneth Grahame’s The Wind in the Willows. This portrayal solidifies the badger’s modern image as a wise and protective figure. The badger’s distinctive black-and-white stripes can be a symbol of honesty, stark contrasts, or the balance between dark and light.
He’s caught the moonlight scent and he has been lovingly and meticulously hand cut from a 100 year old silver shilling. Each pendant is carefully handcrafted to order, using only these recycled silver coins. The coins themselves are the perfect medium for this beautiful design, inline with a love of nature using these coins is the perfect ethical and green solution. No new silver is destructively ‘mined’ and old, uncollectible pure silver coins are saved from the ‘melting pot’ of bullion merchants so some of their history and story live on.
Once the design has been freehand sketched on to the coin it is carefully hand cut and carved using traditional hand saws, chisels and files. This traditional process allows me to have a close connection to each piece, ensuring the end result is personal and unique. Handmade and recycled in Cambridge, England.
Size : Approx 24 mm diameter.

Brief Summary…

Deanna Nicholson (verified owner) –
Dr Badger is so beautiful! His little face looks up at the stars and he seems to be sniffing the night air and wondering where to explore. The detail is amazing which brings him to life and each one is unique – I ordered two for my daughters who had just finished their PhDs – and each is as beautiful as the other but subtly different in the detail. They absolutely love them – thank you!
