Scarab beetle jewellery – handmade and recycled silver & gold coins
This beautiful magical Egyptian winged scarab beetle design necklace has been meticulously crafted from an old English Victorian Florin coin. The coin itself was minted in 1900’s from the finest silver. Not only does the silver ‘some-how’ feel warmer and more beautiful it also has the depth of its history behind it. This combined with the fact that it is more ethical and green to use than freshly mined and processed silver make it the perfect raw material for a contemporary take on a lovely traditional design.
In ancient Egypt, the scarab beetle was a powerful symbol of rebirth, regeneration, and the sun’s daily journey across the sky. It represented the cycle of life, death, and resurrection, mirroring the beetle’s behavior of rolling dung balls, which Egyptians associated with the sun’s movement and the creation of new life from seemingly lifeless matter.
The scarab was also linked to the god Khepri, who was depicted as a scarab and symbolized the rising sun and the creative power of the universe. The scarab’s life cycle, with eggs laid in dung and new beetles emerging, symbolized the cyclical nature of life and the possibility of rebirth. The Egyptians believed the beetle’s actions mirrored the sun’s daily journey, disappearing at night and reappearing in the morning.
The scarab was closely associated with Khepri, the god who pushed the sun across the sky each day. The beetle’s habit of rolling dung balls was seen as analogous to Khepri’s role in moving the sun, linking the beetle to the creative power of the sun and new beginnings.
The scarab’s association with Khepri also extended to transformation and manifestation, as Khepri was the god of creation and new beginnings, according to Study.com.
Scarab amulets were widely used for protection and good luck, and were often placed on mummies to ensure safe passage to the afterlife.
Once flattened into the sacred scarab design is roughly drawn onto the coin surface. This trace outline is carefully followed with an ultra fine piercing saw blade. The interior detail is revealed using the same hand saw and a pendant drill. The silver is also meticulously hand carved and engraved. The scarab represents many things including birth and regeneration of life and the pushing of the sun across the sky. In this case the sun is crafted from a piece of recycled 22ct gold coin
On the reverse an ankh symbol is engraved but this can be something else upon request. The 100% Handcrafted & Recycled in Cambridge, UK
