The Dream Catcher
Dream Catcher necklace – handcrafted & recycled sterling silver coins
A key basis to Native American folklore, the Dream Catcher is a powerful talisman against ill intent from malevolent spirits. Traditionally made from a willow hoop and loosely woven yarn, with feathers and beads dangling down, this talisman was hung over children to protect them from evil dreams. It filtered out bad dreams through the window, and caught good dreams to let them slide down onto the sleeping person.
My little silver version works much the same; it filters out and protects agains ill wishers’ thoughts and auras, while enhancing good thoughts and feelings. The Dream Catcher is made out of a 100 year old shilling, and the feathers are also made out of sterling silver. I individually hand cut and carve each feather using traditional hand tools and age old techniques worthy of such ceremony. After this, I draw the design freehand drawn onto the sterling silver coin, then I drill several holes and cut the sections delicately away. This forms the intricate latticework of the main frame of the dream catcher. I file, smooth and finally polish the edges. The end result is a lovely, original, recycled pendant with a captivating history.
The precious stone is set in 18 ct gold and can either be an emerald, ruby or amethyst. The pendant in the image above is on a flourish chain, but looks gorgeous on a thinner finesse chain.
Each one of these coin pendants I create is different, unusual and unique. Be assured that if you order one it will look equally as lovely!
