The Irish Hare

Irish hare coin jewellery – hand cut coin jewellery, the recycled Irish hare threepence coin.

The three-pence coin was a pre-decimal coin worth 1/80 of an Irish pound. The Irish name (leath reul) literally meant “half reul”, the reul being a sixpence coin worth the same as the Spanish real. Each one of these lovely Irish Hare three pence pieces is totally hand cut and recycled. This makes the pendants green in more ways than one. Again these cute little coins make perfect little lucky charms, pendants and key ring charms. If you decide upon a silver chain you are also welcome to choose a little charm to hang from the hand wrought silver ‘hairy growler’ safety hook.

Through the ages of time flourish designs are representative of movement, transformation, and vitality, often representing the unseen energy behind growth, beauty, and creative expression. This allows me the perfect opportunity to compliment the lovely Irish hare coin with a design which aligns with the spirit of the animal and the coin.

As decorative elements, they transform simple lines into something rich and meaningful, evoking emotions and themes that words alone cannot always capture.

Inspired by flora, the flourishes mimic curling vines and unfurling leaves. These designs symbolize the natural world’s cycles of growth, renewal, and resilience, much like a relationship that grows and matures over time. The organic, flowing lines suggest a living, breathing energy.

Using deeply engraved Flourishes I am attempting to symbolize immortality, longevity, and the abundance of nature. The ancient and widespread use of these motifs connects humanity to the enduring, timeless power of the natural world.

The carved flourishes are a prime example of “emotion in motion”. The sweeping, dynamic curves and loops can convey a range of feelings, from playful and whimsical to elegant and serious.

The image of the solitary hare resonates deeply within the collective unconscious, making it a powerful and versatile symbol for to explore a wide array of human emotions and experiences. For me the moon gazing hare creates an atmosphere of mystery, enchantment, or spiritual contemplation. Symbolizing hope, new beginnings, and the potential for transformation. Whilst conveying a sense of peace, stillness, and a moment of quiet reflection under the night sky.

Connection to the Divine and the Feminine: Hares, particularly those gazing at the moon, are strongly associated with lunar goddesses and the divine feminine in many ancient traditions. The moon itself is often a symbol of feminine energy, intuition, and the cycles of life, death, and rebirth. A moon-gazing hare in poetry can evoke a sense of connection to these powerful forces, the mystical, and a reverence for nature’s mysteries.

Fertility, Rebirth, and New Beginnings: Hares are known for their prolific breeding, making them potent symbols of fertility, abundance, and the regenerative power of life.
