The Ogham Tree Runes
Ogham Rune charm silver coin necklace – handmade and recycled
The Ogham trees are sources of wisdom, inspiration, solace and medicine for who knows how many eons. Each of the native trees have their own particular energy, balance and source of power. Each tree has its own connection to the moon cycle. Thirteen trees for the thirteen moonths.
Rune shapes and forms are perfect for carving into silver and stone, and are an intriguing part of Celtic and Northern European story. The Runes look striking as singular pieces, but can also bound together as a collection depending on mood and purpose. These are definitely tiny, sweet little charms / necklaces. Each piece is carefully and considerately handcrafted from a solid fragment of sterling silver 150 year old Florin coin. It really is a beautiful little charm to craft, although quite challenging because of its size – for instance, each Rune I have managed to cut and carve is approximately 7mm tall! will the entire charm being approx 10mm.
The reverse of each rune charm clearly demonstrates the ethical origins of the raw materials used to create the rune. This compounds the power, will and intent of the charm, making the purpose clearer and more effectual. Download Silver Rune chart
Ogham runes, also known as the “tree alphabet,” each represent a specific tree and its associated symbolism, offering a rich tapestry of meaning for creative, artistic, literary, poetic and divinatory purposes. These symbols, often used in ancient Celtic divination, blend natural imagery with deeper spiritual and emotional concepts.
A very brief summary of meanings would be:
Beithe (Birch): Represents new beginnings, renewal, and purification, much like the birch tree’s early spring foliage.
Luis (Rowan): provides protection, connection, and healing, often linked to safeguarding against negative influences.
Fern (Alder): Associated with resurrection, battle, and courage, reflecting the Alder’s connection to the spirit world.
Sail (Willow): Represents intuition, change, and growth, mirroring the willow’s flexible nature and adaptability.
Nion (Ash): Symbolizes connection, protection, and the life force, as the ash tree was considered sacred and linked to the divine.
Uath (Hawthorn): Represents defense, protection, and growth, often linked to the hawthorn’s thorny branches.
Dair (Oak): provides strength, endurance, and protection, reflecting the oak’s imposing presence and longevity.
Tinne (Holly): Represents defiance, protection, and objectivity, often associated with the holly’s sharp leaves.
Coll (Hazel): Symbolizes wisdom, inspiration, and creativity, linked to the hazel’s association with knowledge and inspiration.
Ceirt (Apple): provides love, healing, and nurturing, reflecting the apple tree’s association with abundance and nourishment.
Muin (Vine): Symbolizes joy, intoxication, and celebration, often linked to the vine’s association with wine.
Ruis (Elder): Symbolizes renewal, regeneration, and protection, often linked to the elder tree’s medicinal properties.
These symbols can be used for meditation, divination, and creative writing, offering a connection to the ancient wisdom and natural world.
They look well on both braided cotton neck cords and the special Hare-y-Gr-Owl-er silver chains. I also have a lovely selection of Elder Futhark Runes
