Claddagh jewellery – handmade and ethical silver Florin coin

This beautiful little Claddagh design necklace has been meticulously crafted from an old English sterling silver Florin coin. The coin itself was minted in 1900’s from the finest silver. Not only does the silver ‘some-how’ feel warmer and more beautiful it also has the depth of its history behind it. This combined with the fact that it is more ethical and green to use than freshly mined and processed silver make it the perfect raw material for a contemporary take on a lovely traditional design.

The Claddagh is a symbol of love (the heart), friendship (the hands), and loyalty (the crown), often summarized as “Let love and friendship reign”. This traditional Irish symbol, originating from Galway, represents enduring commitment in various forms, from romantic partnerships and lifelong friendships to cultural heritage and personal identity.

The Heart: At the center, it symbolizes true love and affection.
The Hands: Reaching out to clasp the heart, they represent friendship and support.
The Crown: Positioned above the heart, it signifies unwavering loyalty and fidelity.

Together, these three elements form a powerful, cohesive message: “Let love and friendship reign,” embodying a strong commitment to these ideals in life.

Once flattened into the required shape, the hands, heart and crown design is roughly drawn onto the coin surface. This trace outline is carefully followed with an ultra fine piercing saw blade. The interior detail is revealed using the same hand saw and a pendant drill. The silver is also meticulously hand carved and engraved. The Claddagh / fáinne Chladaigh is traditionally an Irish ring given which represents love, loyalty, and friendship (the hands represent friendship, the heart represents love, and the crown represents loyalty).
