The Tau Cross

Tau Cross necklace – handmade and recycled silver 100 year old sterling silver shilling

The Tau Cross is a common feature on Coptic icons from Egypt and refers to the one of Ireland’s best known tau crosses at the harbour on Tory Island, 15km off the coast of Donegal.  The Tau Cross on Tory has become a symbol for the isolated island, where islanders are often cut off from the mainland during the stormy winter months.  With thanks to one of my best friends Tony Murphy I was lucky enough to create a Tau Cross for the late Patsy Dan, King of Tory Island.  Rest in Peace Patsy Dan.

I lovingly craft each Tory Tau cross pendant from wonderful Irish copper and bronze coins. The coins themselves are the perfect medium for this beautiful design, inline with a love of nature using these coins is the perfect ethical and green solution. This protects the history and ensures their stories live on.  You are also free to choose the have the Tau Cross made from a 100 year old two shilling coin.  The finish and size remain the same but the pendant is thicker for those that prefer something heavier and more substantial.

Once the design is freehand sketched on to the coin, it is hand cut and carved using traditional hand saws, chisels and files. This traditional process allows me to have a close connection to each piece. This also gives the added bonus of each piece being completely unique.  Each cross is individually handmade and recycled in Cambridge, England.

NECKLACE INFORMATION

Many of the necklace / pendant designs are complete. These designs have a sterling silver chain attached to the pendant from both sides. This design is perfect for looking in a mirror to fasten the necklace. It also makes a fabulous feature of the handmade hook catch (and star if chosen).  The necklace length you choose includes the length of the actual pendant. Do not worry about the pendant dimensions we will take care of your order. Order the necklace length you would normally wear and the necklace you receive will sit in the perfect position..

Large size : approx 210 mm (good size if you want a looser dangly medium fit)
